Although I'm a huge Nintendo fan, I have to admit, I have been underwhelmed by what the 3DS has give us so far. Yeah, there are a few really good games on it, but considering the hype and promises we were given (NETFLIX STREAMING! MGS3! A NEW MEGA MAN LEGENDS GAME!), I can't help but feel a little...OK, EXTREMELY disappointed with what we've received up until this point.

My question, I guess, is what does Nintendo HAVE to do to save the 3DS from getting Dreamcasted? More third party support, more online integration, more applications, what? In short, what would it take for the big "N" to get you to pick up one of the handhelds for this holiday season?

Maybe DSiWare and Virtual Console support, as well as photo-streaming and sharing could help? How about new retail game releases - will they also suffice? Those two things are what I think Nintendo should do in order to prevent the 3DS from going the way of the Virtual Boy.

Sales have dramatically increased since the price drop a few months ago. People are buying this system. With a Pokemon game being released in a few days as well as a Mario 3d in less then a month and Mario Kart 7 in the beginning of December, the 3DS is in very good shape.

I highly doubt it's doomed. It just started off slow like the PS3 did back in 2006. I remember some people were speculating that the PS3 would die an early death...but it's still going strong 5 years later.

I'm actually thinking about getting one of these in the near future. It looks alot better than the ds and the games they have coming out look pretty sweet.

It's not doomed, but I don't think it'll match the success the first DS had as the market has changed quite a bit. It's not going to be the PSVita that effects it though it's definitely the phone gaming market, people can say it's irrelevant all they want (I also prefer a dedicated handheld like 3DS) but it most definitely is not.

^^ Phone games are often so bland and get boring in five minutes. They're a cheap substitute for actual hand held gaming.

It was just a lack of killer apps for the system. Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D took until a few months after the release of the system to come out. Now we have Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 coming out. A new Pokemon spinoff just released and probably next year we will get Luigi's Mansion 2.

People say the system has performed poorly yet tend to neglect the sales numbers. Since the price drop in the summer, sales have went very high. What happens in two weeks when SML is released and then three weeks later when Mario Kart hits the shelves?

An N64 remake sold quite well. Two new Mario games should fly off the shelves taking systems with them.

Well, it's not flying off the shelves the way the DS did and I think that's what people are concerned about. The thing is, I think it also took the DS a while before it started selling huge numbers, people don't really mention that though. They expected 3DS to come out and do the same crazy numbers the Wii was doing from day one and that just wasn't going to be the case because market conditions are much different now. The Wii U isn't going to be selling like crazy right out of the gate either.

Which means the Wii U might be the Virtual Boy of the 21st century. That is, it might be a major commercial failure like the VB was when it first came out.

I don't think Wii U will sell like the Wii but it will most definitely not be the next Virtual Boy either.

People are being completely unrealistic if they are basing their concerns on initially slow sales due to a poor library at launch. If this generation taught us one thing it is not jumping to conclusions on initial sales. The PS3 is a prime example.

The console looks alright, though i heard they were going to do a redesign of it to include two joysticks in 2013.
