I recently wrote an article in response to the long held assumptions that video games are contributing to juvenile delinquency, obesity and idiocy, and I figured you would all enjoy taking a look at it:

    http://cartersville.patch.com/articles/don-t-blame-the-games-blame-the-parents

So what's your take? Do you think video games are just being used as a scapegoat for deeper problems, or is there an outside chance that games like GTA or Postal serve a real risk to children?

I think the people who are against these games go overboard in their criticism, but there is definitely some truth in their views.

Video games don't cause violence and stupidity. Horrible parenting and lack of judgment and education cause all that. Same goes for rape, murder, and armed robbery.

Well one could question the parenting skills of anyone who would buy their kids these type of games... So I guess it goes hand in hand.

Most kids become violent because they can't handle not getting their way. In my experience most violent people do not come from strict homes and if they did there were other factors at play..

Instead their parents never refuse to give into their demands or let them cry it out. Also many kids today are left to themselves and the parents are not around to raise them. If the video games are a factor in their violent behavior it is only because the parents set the stage for it.

The obesity problem which I don't think is that big of an issue, is because the parents keep their kids indoors all the time.

Take this Fisher price SMART CYCLE commercial.

The game looks like it would be fun for a kid, but wouldn't it be better if he was really riding his bike outside with other kids? Isn't this setting the stage for kids to live their lives in a virtual world?

While it is debatable what effects video games have on kids, one thing is for sure. Kid's need to get out of the house and shouldn't make their life about games.

I hope the lawmakers of Venezuela read your article. In 2009, they blamed violent video games on a rise of violence in the country and successfully got them outlawed!

And kids shouldn't be blamed for the things they say or do from R-rated movies. Who let the kids watch the movies, hmm?

It's not always the parents falt though. MY nephew is cirrently serving time in a state mental hospital for saying he wanted to shoot up his school like columbine and he had a very good upbringing. From the way he talks they're thinking he may be sociopathic, thats hardly the parents fault.

I don't think violent video games or parents are to blame; its the kid's own nature/personality.

For example, I (and i'm sure you do too) know alot of people who play violent video-games but aren't violent. I've played a fuckton of such video games in which I shoot/blow-up/ass-kick/slay bad guys but never imitated that stuff coz sub-consciously, I'm not 'stimulated' enough to go the extra mile. Thats the reason we all can't be doctors, lawyers, entertainers, businessmen and so on, because we are all unique.

As for parents I don't blame them because NO MATTER how hard you try, you can never watch/be there for your kids 24/7. For example, how would you know if a kid has a porno-mag hiding somewhere in his/her room (or in this day and age, nasty-ass video-clips/pics on their computer or mobile device?)

The bottomline, it depends on the way the kids interact with the surroundings and its a parent's duty to act as guide(s) not dictators. Y'know, just the way like not everyone born in the gutter will be destined to live there. People have made it out and I'm sure you can think of a lot of inspirational stories you might have heard of along those lines.

I have played Just Cause 2, and you don't see me going to Arab to kill people and steal their motorcycles.

No, parents want to have a reason behind why their kids are delusional and have a knack for hurting/inujuring people. They chose video games to point fingers and also to have a way to get money out of someone/something. It's not always the parent's fault; it's mostly the kid. On some terms, parents need to see boundaries for their kids (if need be). Parents are only blaming video games for their kids "actions" but movies, T.V. shows. Have you seen some of the kids television; it's been dumbed down A LOT. I grew up watching Looney Toons, seeing Elmer Fudd shooting Bugs with a damn shotgun; Wild E. Coyote chase and try to capture Road Runner, I honestly turned out well through out my life and still continue to do so. Just now a days parents just don't know how to be parents based on society's way of rasing. When I have kids, I will raise them as my mother and father would raise them. I will punish them in a supermarket if they are being obnoxious; I will take their games/toys away, they will say "yes, sir" "yes, Ma'am" and will have respect for others, rather than these kids crying if they do not get their way.

I played MK when it became such a "problem". I still play it to this day. I also play, Silent Hill, Siren, Resident Evil, The Suffering, Castlevania. I do not have any of these "psychological" disorders these kids have claimed to have.
