I've had my current Playstation 3 for a little over 3 years now and it's the original design (40 gb hard drive). I sent it out to be fixed a week ago and I should be getting it back within another week or two. Once I get it back I am considering trading it in at GameStop for the newer version (160 or 320 gb). Anyway, besides the slightly different appearance and much bigger hard drives, is the new version of the PS3 any better than the old version? Does it have any additional features the old version doesn't have? Should I go ahead with the trade, or hang onto my old PS3??? Thanks.

I could've sworn the original PS3 was backwards compatible and they took that aspect away so You would have to rebuy all the PS1 & PS2 classics from their network. Is that true or am I imagining things again.

I believe the PS3, both old and new versions, are still backwards compatible with PS1 games, but not PS2.

I have the old PS3 model. I just like the touch sensor power button and the 4 usb ports. Other than that, no real difference. Both models run the same and etc.

I have a newer ps3. I don't think it's backward compatible at all (def not ps2 compatible). Also, they removed the abiloity to install linux.

I'm hoping the newer PS3 will still play the PS1 games because I have a lot of PS1 discs. I still have my PS2, so at least that plays PS1 games, if I find that the newer PS3 doesn't. I hope at least the newer PS3 will play the downloaded PS1 classics.

According to a cnet article, it does indeed play old ps1 games.

No dice. Like the recent PS3 models, the PS3 Slim does not offer backward compatibility with PS2 game discs. However, it can play older PS1 titles (on disc or via download from the PlayStation Store.)

Kinda weird that it would be able to play the archaic ps1 games but not the more recent ps2 ones.

You could play PS2 games on the first and second generation consoles which had hardwarebased PS2 emulation. The third generation had limited software emulation. They omited it on the slim to cut cost. All versions play PS1 games.
