I see tons of people saying stuff like "The 80s and 90s had no problems at all and everybody in the world was happy and on January 1, 2000, every single good thing from the 90s died and Justin Bieber became popular".

They keep saying the second it turned 2000 everything became Justin Bieber autotune CGI loving 2D hating. I see people saying that Saturday Morning cartoons suddenly stopped in 2000 and that everyone suddenly became rude.

I have tons of memories from 1997 onwards, and IIRC, in 2000 the pop culture was basically the late 90s as well. Justin Bieber wasn't even singing, and people were just as polite as they were in the late 90s. Also, I still remember seeing tons of Saturday Morning cartoons (Sylvester and Tweety was one still running) still on, as well as the BSB vs NSYNC craze of the late 90s. The WTC was still standing as well. Not everything was digital yet either.

Today's stuff comes from the very late 2000s (2007-2009).

So why do many retro people say that everything changed to what it is today the second it turned 2000?

I have never heard that one before.

And for the record, I don't think it is really necessary to pretend as if the shitty boy bands and fluffy pop shit from the previous decades were any less or any more shitty than Bieber.

Don't forget that most kids born 2000 and on are apparently spoiled shitheads with to many technical devices and that we were all perfect it the 80s and 90s and never dissed our parents or misbehaved in public and had no texting devices or anything like that to distract us . Because owning an ipod and a cell phone automaticly equals bad spoiled kid. Not to mention that no one was ever kidnapped or murdered back in the day either, this pedophile/kidnapping stuff is all the new trend.

Oh, and there are no cartoons on today either and everything pretty much sucks.

Just ignore them. Obviously there is a fad that people born in the late 80s/early 90s are latching on to, called "90s kids", and want to sound cool and say that everything from the 00s sucked. Seriously, there one thing to dislike something because of personal perferences but it is another to dislike something just to prove your cause to some sort of arbitrary and trivial idea.

Those people are dumb. The 80's and 90's had their fair share of bad music, movies, TV and animation too and there's also a lot of great music, movies and TV and animation from post 2000. I personally thought '02 - '04 was mostly great for all that stuff and I've got a lot of happy memories of those times.

If there is one thing i've learned, even just in the last 8 years, it's that as great as the past events in your life were, you can't ever recapture them. You can't go back. You can remember them but try not to dwell on them. I spent to much time doing that when I could have been making NEW memories and having fun in current situations instead of whineing that it wasn't quite the same and that everything now sucks. It's just a different time period. I've watched some of my favorite old shows that I hadn't watched in years and to be honest, as awesome as they were back then, they just don't hold up for me anymore. Back then they were awesome because they were cool for the time. Now they are just awesome in an awesomely BAD way because of the nostalgia.

Actually everything didn't change the second that it turned 2000. It actually changed March 12, 2000 at 3:48 PM which is why I am gonna start a petition for Vertex to include movies and television programs through that specific time frame. Otherwise we are all just living one big retro lie...

It's only someone's opinion. I happen to think things were alot better in the 80's-90's than now (though I agree with you that it's overblown as well).......And yes, we actually did have real Saturday Morning Cartoons and it was a huge deal when the new shows would come out in the fall, kids today do not have that. A minor detail but still true.... Same thing with after school cartoons and educational game shows. We had them growing up, kids today do not for the most part.
Kids in my generation actually played outside and got exercise......wayyy too many kids today do not (I see it every single day and in many different towns, unfortunately there's a reason why kids today are factually, fatter than kids years ago, and it's not just the bad food eaten today by everyone)
As for television, I happen to think TV was alot better years ago, but even saying that, I understand 20-30 years ago there was also plenty of bad television (although NOTHING as bad as "shows" like Jersey Shore and Babies being pushed into Beauty Pagents by parents)....but i'm also not a fan of reality tv or most dramas, so that automatically means i'm personally not gonna like about 85% of tv today. If others do, that's all opinion.
As for music, every generation thinks theirs is the best for music. There's plenty of good and bad music today just like there was 20-30 years ago (although I truly dont think anyone as untalented as Keisha ever existed in the mainstream years ago and made good money, but that's a different story)

So yea, the "back in my day" stuff is overblown by some people (and I get guilty of it too sometimes), but there's also no denying that alot of things are different now, and sometimes not for the better in most people's opinion.

I don't agree with the people who think the 2000s culture started automatically on Jan 1,2000. I actually think it
started sometime in 2003 after the War on Terror began.

Today's pop music makes the Spice Girls and boy bands look like absolute genius.

At least some of that shit was kind of catchy, and most of it was them singing like amateurs on their own, rather than using that God awful autotune.

When I watch a video on youtube from 2007 or 2008, they seem so old and outdated. It's not just the lower video quality either. Our mindset and our priorities have changed a lot, especially politically.

It's funny to go back and watch a young persons older videos and how much they have changed in 5 years. Hell some of the people here have changed a lot since I first joined this site in 2006. As we get older we tend to change less, but young people change rapidly which is was something from 2 years ago to them seems old and lame.

No matter how bad things may be, we will always take some nostalgia with us.

It kind of did, only the culture didn't start crushing in until maybe mid 2000.

every one does this the time you grew up in were the bestto you and you can sustify saying this . my reasons all my favorite shows then i enjoyed the wide range of music from the 90's there was only one war and it lasted like 2 weeks gas was not 5 dollers a gallon wrestling and comics reached an all time high in popularity.my favorite music was birthed in the 90's and 7 of my to 10 bands exploded onto the scene around the same time and personally i was much happier.
kids growing up in the 2000,s has some things also the tecnology boom and the cartoon scenes look promissing the avengers beavis and butthead returning comic book movies the new spiderman cartoon and movies thats just things i am looking forward to i am not a kid there is probably alot more but to me the 90's were the best times.
signature you think just because a guy reads comics he can't start some shit

The reason why I think "tv sucks" for the since 2006 in regards to cartoons, is that the networks theirselves suck. Think about it, we had over 20 quality animation networks on cable and regular tv from 1990-2005, ranging from ABC Kids (schoolhouse rock era) to Toonami.....but those 20 QUALITY networks..............dwindled to just 2 in 2005 (that were still on top of their A game), which were Toonami and Adult Swim. Then that got worse in 2006 when Toonami started airing live action, UNDERPROMOTING J.L.U., using Sara, Peter Cullen, Absolution and gang less, focusing mostly on Pokemon, Yugioh, & Naruto instead of BALANCING the spotlight on all their shows, etc.

Then Adult Swim started falling off when Adult Swim started airing more Family Guy etc., to where you had to stay up until 2 in the friggin' morning to watch most anime which is a SPIT IN THE FACE concidering the fact that Anime was what brought Adult Swim to the dance in the first place. That's what also brought Toon Disney down, bringing in non-original Toon Disney shows-----pushing Gargoyles and the gang to the EARLY a.m. slot.

But I agree that you have to back up your comments especially if you're going to say "tv sucks", give a reason instead of sounding prejudice. Like in school when we're tought when giving class presentations, that even though we have A-list material, we still have to PRESENT THEM WELL to the multiple age audiences. Same thing for our beloved 90s-early 2000's networks. I get so annoyed when the excuse always pops out of people's mouths that "oh those shows still come on".....BULL CRAP! They still suck if you don't present them well, the difference of commercial quality between cartoon networks of the 90s/early 2000s and 2006-2011 should be quite OBVIOUS!

I also can't stand the fact that we're being BRAINWASHED into believing that the only way to enjoy cartoons is to OVERUSE the convenience of watching shows on the internet. Even at it's most convenience, it's still not better than watching it on a QUALITY network!

What do you all have to say about this?
