Over the past couple of years, as Halo has gained a large effect on the video game industry, I noticed that Halo really ruined the video game industry.

Halo has become so big that now all video game creators are aiming too high with their ideas in hopes that it will become the next big thing.

The creators of these video games usually have giant story arcs that make sense. To name one, I think "Killzone" was aimed to high.

So what do you guys think? Halo obviously had an effect on the video game industry, we just don't know if it was good or bad.

gaming sucks now because its been westernized. Gaming was a million times better back in the 90s when we actually had a diverse library to choose from

The fuck? Video games were created in America, you know. And Japanese characters like Sonic the Hedgehog were intentionally created for western audiences. And ever since the NES, there's always been a balance of western and eastern video games and influences within around the world. How do you "westernize" something that's had a major influence from the west during the entire course of its existence? Please, elaborate.

Halo ruined video games because now all games are tired shooting games. Seriously, think about it. How many shoooting games are there about alien invasions, World War II, or the Vietnam War? This is what made the 80s and 90s great because even every platformer game had its own unique ideas.

It's Halo's fault there's World War II and Vietnam shooting games? That makes no fucking sense at all.

Ever heard of Contra? Wolfenstein? Metal Slug? Rush'n Attack? Bionic Commando? Golgo 13? Real life war has always had an effect on video games, and that's retarded to credit it to Halo. And wars against aliens? Even a few of the games I mentioned with basis from real life wars have that, as well as Doom, Metroid (although maybe not literal war in that case), EarthBound, and many, many more. You would have to be retarded to think that the concept of games with those settings, or the overabundance of shooters in the entire history of video games, were a direct result of Halo.

I'm not a fan of Halo at all, and I never have been. But I've never let its popularity get to me so much that I stupidly blame it for "ruining the video game market" when there's, in fact, more games to appeal to individual target audiences than ever. I'm astounded there are as many as three individual people who think this is the case, but then again, look where I'm posting.

Western PC developers were great. They focused on making things simple, but added layers of depth for people who were really interested in taking it further. See shooter games in the 90s like TRIBES, modding communities of quake and unreal, etc. Not to mention there were simple yet extremely complex strategy games that had great difficulty scales for all sorts of gamers.

Western console developers have ALWAYS been a joke. Unless they were translating a game from japanese to english, ive never really enjoyed western developers. GTA games are only fun for so long then they become boring as hell. You mentioned how gaming was originally designed by western people, but the first consoles post crash of 1983 were not.

The SNES, PS1, N64, NES, Saturn, and PS2 own every console of this gen. Hell id argue the SNES, PS1, and PS2 each are better than the PS3/Wii/360 combined.

so you're telling us Rockstar is a joke? You do know the GTA games have a great story-line and it's not all gangbanging and stealing
cars. Also, may I introduce you to Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire, also by Rockstar.

Fallout 3 and Mass Effect are stupid, linear non evolving Western games with no replayability right? Only thing really missing from the Japanese market that differs today is less JRPGs on major consoles which makes me sad. At least theyre on the DS.
To stay on topic I dont think Halo changed the game Industry that much. If you were to blame any franchise thatd be Call of Duty which i think is about to fall apart like Guitar Hero.

Agreed. I never liked Halo, but it didn't ruin the video game market.

Can't get mad about Halo just because it's a great game and others may have borrowed some elements from the game. I definetly would'nt go as far as to say they straight "ruined all video games" but they did spawn some imitators, but thats what happens when You make a great anything.

Yes, there were games in the 80s and 90s that involved shooting and alien invasions but it wasn't until Halo that this became pretty much a standard plot point for all games.

Pretty much every game I had for my NES involved aliens and shooting.

And you can't say Halo started some kind of FPS fad. I played Goldeneye, Unreal Tournament, Half Life and Quake III Arena long before Halo came out.

Seriously, could there possibly be a more retarded statement than what this thread is all about?

Halo did not do anything to kill video games. Period. Yes, I do agree that Halo is an overrated series that's nothing more than the same thing in every game. But it did not ruin video games as a whole.

Why is it so apparent that every single thing that we had when we were kids has to have been a godsend from above, or something that's been blessed in some magical rainbow fairy land? Good lord, some of you guys sound like my grandfather, where he hates just about everything that's new in our modern society.

In other words, there is some serious old fartdom going on in this terrible thread.
