That is the deal breaker for me, I'd play GameCube more than Wii U and Wii games. GameCube was Nintendo's last good console.

I'd have to disagree, I owned a Gamecube and it was nothing great.

In case the owner doesn't own the original I guess...

I own a GameCube and a Wii, the whole point to backwards compatibility is to minimize the amount of consoles you have. If I get the Wii U, it would be much easier if they made it backwards compatible with both so I don't NEED to keep my GameCube or Wii. It just makes it a lot more easier.

No, it's not the best console ever or anything like that but it's definitely better than the Wii and possibly even the N64. It had normal controllers, no motion control, the GBA extention, and A LOT of good games (unlike Wii). A lot of RPGs. No stupid kiddy games and gimmicks. It was definitely Nintendo's last hardcore console. I still buy games for it, infact I bought one last week.

I think when referring to games, hardcore just means good games for veteran gamers.

I'm not believing it was better then the Wii by any means. The GCN could have been so much better if not for certain circumstances which effected it during its time: Tough competition and lack of third party support. Still though, it gave us some memorable first party titles like Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario, The Metroid Prime series, etc.., This is one under appreciated system.

The Wii, on the other hand, has a strong library if one can look hard enough. The top quality games seem to have a shelf life of a gallon of milk though. When I bought Punch Out and Animal Crossing it was like searching for a needle in a haystack. The last time I saw PU on the shelves at BB was two years ago and Animal Crossing? Besides the new $19.99 packaging, I can't even remember. When you walk into a store and see shelf after shelf of shovelware crap w/o seeing many of the first party titles, only one impression can be drawn.

The GC was ok, but it really lacked when compared to the competition. Saying that it was better than the N64 isn't saying much at all. That system had a horrible library of games.

My only problem is that it takes only one controller at a time!

Neither was especially great, but the N64 was horrible.

GC had nothing on PS2. I tried going that generation with just a GC but I finally gave up in mid-2003 and got a PS2. There were just too many great games on it that GC didn't get. Silent Hill 2 and 3, Metal Gear Solid 3, GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas, Tekken 5. Then of course there the Sony exclusive franchises like Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, God of War, Dark Cloud, Sly Cooper... All GC had was Nintendo's games and to be honest, outside of Smash Bros. Melee and Metroid Prime 1, the big first party franchises lacked the punch they'd had on other Nintendo consoles.

Nintendo seems to be getting farther and farther away from actual video gaming. I wouldn't be surprised if their next console is a dish washer.

If memory serves me right, it had at least one of the Lego series games which has proven to be a hit. Rogue Squadron III was also a fantastic game as well as Namco Museum. All in all though, besides first party games the majority of third party titles were regrettable.

Personally, I feel the GCN was stellar when it came to the likes of Mario, Samus, Zelda, etc.., Whether it was Paper Mario (1k Year Door), the numerous Zelda titles (compilations included), Mario Golf or Metroid Prime (what I consider to be one of the best series in gaming), these were hard to beat.

Another strength of the GCN were the incentives and different packages available. I have the platinum console that came with Mario Kart Double Dash but I always wanted to get my hands on the one which came with Metroid Prime. The prices online are ridiculous though. Also, there was a point where Nintendo included vouchers with the GCN that enabled you to get a game. My memory is fuzzy and I can't recall if the voucher was included with my platinum GCN but I ended up getting MP2 for just a few dollars (I thought it was a $30 or $40 voucher) after using the voucher.

Overall, the GCN had some strengths but was outgunned compared with its competition.
