I was raised in a really small town, and the nearest McDonald's was over 30 miles away in Marquette, Mich. Normally, we'd only go to Marquette when it was really necessary (doctor/dentist appointments, etc.). So for me, going to McDonald's was a rare treat. I know city people may laugh at this, but I should mention that child obesity was rare in my school.

I still occasionally go to McDonald's and it really doesn't have much magic to me as it obviously did as a kid. Big Macs don't taste as good and neither do their cheeseburgers. They're still good once in a while but nowhere near how it used to be going to the McDonald's back in the 90s for me. I remember a local mall even had McDonald's and that had to be my favorite one.

One of my favorite places as a kid! Memories:

~The high chairs used to always be stocked with tie-on plastic bibs with McDonalds characters on them, and a wet-nap in the pocket
~Happy Meals had a little package of cookies
~Happy Meal Toys and Books! My favorites were the McDonalds foods that transformed into dinosaurs or robots, Monster Trucks, Dress-up McNuggets, Muppet Babies on skateboards and in wagons, etc., Berenstein Bears (sp?), pop-up Fraggles in vegetable cars...Muppet Babies Books and "Santa Claus: The Movie" (with Dudley Moore) books
~Boo-Buckets at Halloween, as others have mentioned
~They used to sell Christmas ornaments each year that came were characters from Disney movies: Bernard and Bianca from Rescuers, Gus and Jack from Cinderella, Oliver and Dodger from Oliver and Company (those two played music). My brother and I had these each year, we still hang them on the Christmas tree at my Mom's house
~Plush Christmas Kermit, Piggy, and Fozzy. More treasured holiday favorites!

                            Very fond memories.

I have wonderful memories from when I was four, five years old and my dad packing me up in our old Dodge and heading out to a McDonald's for lunch. The food was okay, but actually seemed a lot better than today. The burgers tasted like BEEF. I couldn't believe a few years ago, deciding to pick up a cheeseburger for old time's sake and being totally disgusted. It tasted weird, like it was a mix of cereal filler and ground up old tire. Bleh!

Anyway, I loved playing first usually back then and didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the food, EXCEPT...the hot breakfasts. Those pancakes, sausages and syrup were delicious!

I agree. Much of the magic is gone. I remember back in the 90s getting the 29 cent hamburgers and 39 cent cheeseburgers and they tasted amazing. When I was eating them I was so excited and felt like the luckiest kid in the world. Today a McDonald's double cheeseburger certainly isn't bad but it tastes nowhere as good to me as it once did but maybe that's due to my taste buds changing more than their actual formula though I wouldn't be surprised if they changed up their recipe formula to cut corners and save costs.

I remember that all my local McDonald's from my childhood have the
"Playplace"sections from the 90's or were converted to locations with
those Playplaces.I think one of them even converted into a McDonald's

I'd have to agree. Burger King was always so much better to me than McDonald's and all I really ever ordered from Burger King were Whoppers and I never got tired of them. At McDonald's at the time I'd tried the hamburger, cheeseburger, quarter pounder and Big Mac and all of those never came close to the barbeque flame broiled Whopper. Later all I really ordered from McDonald's was the Big 'N Tasty and McChicken. I'm really itching to try the Whopper and hoping to try it for the first time in years this coming week but I really doubt it will taste as great as it did in the 90s. Like many things I'm sure so much corners have been cut from the former product that it tastes like crap in comparison of its former glory. I remember trying a Whopper in the mid 2000s and it just seemed off to me compared to how it was in the 90s. I can only imagine the Whopper now.
