While dropping some donation stuff off at a Goodwill/Salvation Army type place the other day, I came across some vintage copies of the Hardy Boys that were $5 a piece. Since I loved the books when I was 9 (and still have a bunch of 'em lying around someplace), I bought them on impluse to see how they held up now. They're from the late 1950s (if the ads on the back for Tom Swift Jr., Tom Corbett: Space Cadet, and Rick Brant, all of which seem to reek of forgettable '50s pulp sci-fi, are anything to go by  ), and have a tweed-ish cover with dustjackets. When I decided to see how What Happened at Midnight (which is the one that I used to love back in 4th grade, mainly due to the amount of immature sex jokes that could be made from the title) held up today, I found that it was completely different from what I remember. Instead of the book opening with the boys preparing to "break in" to a vacationing scientists house to retrieve a secret invention before the spies do, this copy opens with Chet Morton, the token fatass in the books, teaching the Hardy's how to use an automat. I did a little research, and thanks to the Aspies of the internet, I found that the books were rewritten starting in 1959 to update the books, remove racial/ethnic stereotypes, and shorten the books to keep up with the changing times. This also meant that many of the plots in the earlier books had to be completely changed (one book about a group of smugglers who use a flickering torch to communicate while stealing experimental silkworms used to make the silk for parachutes was thrown out in favor of a mystery surrounding nightclub called The Flickering Torch where a shady band was involved in counterfeiting diamonds). Very weird :P

Sorry for the cruddy pics, my digital camera was "borrowed"...

Woah cool find :D, that is why I like buying at Goodwill and the Salvation Army. Also I think the quality is actually pretty good, at least on my end.

Update: I've read and finished all of them, and upon rereading the revised versions, I've found that these original editions are MUCH better. It strikes me as odd that they even felt the need to revise them in the first place 0_0.
