    Now, this is something that I've been talking with my sister a lot, and I do agree and disagree with her on some points. But does anyone here think that Nintendo is losing their originality. It seems like when you look at all the games that they make these days, they're usually something from some of the other game franchises that they use a lot, such as Mario and Zelda. However, it seems as if they're no longer attempting to make a new game that's not from one of their older franchises. Something that's not from Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, etc. Just an entirely new franchise on their own.

    Coming from a fan of these franchises, I still enjoy what they put out there, and I'm usually looking forward to the next big Mario or Zelda game that they release. My sister on the other hand claims that Nintendo is going way downhill because they don't make anything original anymore. While I do agree that they haven't made a lot of original games, I do however, disagree that they're going downhill for that reason. But then again, that could be because I'm a personal fan of these games so that's out of the question.

    Anyway, what do you guys think? Do you think Nintendo losing their originality?

      Yeah, they definitely are. I'd rather see them put work into an original idea that's really strong, rather than an umpteenth Mario Party title.

          I don't think so, i think that when they do try something new it doesn't sell well so they stick with what they already have, and what they already have is great. I also think they should make new games of stuff like star fox and f-zero and other franchises of thier's that they don't pay attention to as much.

            I think Disney is in the same boat. Both companies are just so clever at rehashing old ideas that the fans hardly notice.

              Oh I think so. I think theyve been out of ideas for a while now. As you said there really isnt anything theyre putting out that isnt based off Mario or a sequel to those main titles.

                Have you seen how many games the Wii has? There is a game for the TV show Grey's Anatomy for pete's sake. It probably isn't made by Nintendo, but then again most of the games aren't. The developers have lots of ideas, most of them just suck and are made for a small target audience. The games that sell the best are generally the rehashed stuff. As long as this is the case they will keep doing what they are doing. Being the Wii is the top selling game system they must be doing something right. I personally like the PS3 myself. Much better graphics and more adult oriented games.

                As far as new ideas, it just isn't Nintendo, it's all video games. It isn't just video games; it's movies, music, clothing, architecture and many other things. Just about everything has already been done and now it's just rehashing and remixing of old ideas. Anything new is accused of copying something else.

                  Nintendo, the Wii specifically, has shown that originality isn't as important with this system (in terms of titles) as others. The 360 wouldn't fare well if it had 10 games released featuring Frank West or the characters from L4D but Nintendo can get away with this. As boring and repetitive as it seems, I can't blame them because these games sell.

                  From the introduction of the Wii until right now, how many games have been released featuring Mario? In terms of sheer numbers, I'd say "overkill" is the perfect word. Personally, I feel the four titles of Paper Mario, SMG, NSMB and SMG2 would be sufficient. In addition to these, we have Mario playing baseball, soccer, etc.., I can't disagree with those saying Nintendo should make more of an effort to introduce new franchises instead of going to the same characters from 25 years ago.

                      The Last Story is new, so is Pikmin (somewhat). F-Zero and StarFox are still missing on the Wii. Also take a look at the 3DS... I believe they know what they are doing.

                        Not too sure, but I do feel Nintendo are in some ways not as good a game company as they used to be;

                        They changed their nice red logo to a dull gray one (though still the same shape and font as before)
                        They introduced region lockout on HANDHELDS GAMES CONSOLES, WHICH YOU'D TAKE WITH YOU ON VACATION TO OTHER REGIONS AND BUY GAMES WHILE YOU'RE AWAY, with the Nintendo DSi, and are continuing this new found bad decision with the Nintendo 3DS! This was NEVER the case with the DSs before the i, the Game Boys or EVEN THE VIRTUAL BOY! Eventually people will notice and complain, hopefully.
                        I miss their original d-pad, first seen on the NES pad, last seen on the Nintendo Gamecube pad.

                          What about the packaging of its Wii games? Each system had packaging that was assertive, colorful, bright, etc.., yet with the Wii most games have very boring packaging. What happened to the days of announcing a game was only available on a particular Nintendo system?

                            They focus too much on the handhelds,I say spend some time on the consoles.

                              I miss what old game console boxes look like;

                              flashy backgrounds
                              brief descriptions

                              They were great!

                                Nope, they've been peddling their same original stuff for around 30 years. :twisted:

                                    The entire industry is running out of ideas. There's been too many sequels and revivals this gen. I actually don't mind new games in popular series like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, etc. but they have to be spaced out well. Nintendo has definitely overdone it with Mario. I like SMG 1, 2, NSMB Wii and Mario Kart, but most of the other stuff just wasn't needed.

                                      I don't think originality is that big of an issue since Nintendo make so many different franchises (Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Kirby, Donkey Kong and others) and sub-franchises (like Mario Party, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. and Paper Mario) for different gameplay experiences so everyone is satisfied. Companies always reinvent old ideas and create new ones, like Disney for example.
