Not so much as weirdest-looking game, weird looking games are a dime a dozen nowadays. One need only go into XBLA or Wiiware to find a game that seems to have been developed in Bizarro World (IloMilo is a perfect -and recommended- example). But rather the wierdest feeling game you happened to experience. A game that left you with a certified "Dude,WTF?" expression in your mug.

Enter Psygnosis,a British studio best known for Wipeout on PSX before they were bought by Sony in 1999. They released some pretty weird sci-fi-related games during the mid 90s. Games like Shadow Master -a bizarre looking FPS that felt like being inside a Journey album cover- and O.D.T. were pretty good examples of their perchant for weirdness. But the crowned jewel of their craft in mindfucking is without a doubt Sentient.

This adventure game released for PC/PSX in 1996 had a fairly interesting plot: In the future a 1984-like totalitarian regime rules Earth and its space colonies and discovers a new type of star that emits a form of plasma energy that can be harvested. An space station set in orbit around the star has been build and you are the new medical officer assigned for a 5 year term on it. When you arrive, the station is in chaos and you have to figure out a series of headscratching mysteries before the station enters a decaying orbit and falls into the star.

Sounds standard sci-fi fare, right? Except that this game is -to quote John Candy in Little Shop of Horrors- SO VERY WEEEEEIRD! Ever had one of those dreams that leave you feeling strange all day after you wake up? That's exactly how this game feels. The combination of FPV with the increasingly bafling plot paired with some dream sequences inside a hedge maze makes Sentient a gaming experience that will make you wish you had a tumbler to make sure you were in the Real World. No gaming experience since -no Silent Hill, Katamari Damacy or Heavy Rain- has come close to matching its Comfortably Numb-like feeling of weirdness.

There is a battle between two wolves inside us all.

One is evil and the other one is good. Which wolf will win? The one you feed the most.

Die Hard for the PC Engine(Turbographx 16). Weird because it was only released in Japan. It's actually a solid game, a lot more fun and more well designed than the NES game. What's even weirder is that you actually start out the game outside the Nakatomi building in some kind of forest and have to navigate your way inside the building instead of just starting out there from the beginning.

LBA was pretty weird. Though I always saw Twinsen as a human version of Abe from the Oddworld games.

Kula World was pretty weird...and by weird I mean trippy as fuck.

McDonald's Monogatari. It's a game about being an employee at McDonald's. You can make burgers, fries, drinks, and even work the register in the mini-games.

                        Probably Clayfight 2: Judgement Clay.

Yes, the name of the game describes its sense of humor perfectly. One thing I remember is a muscle-bound rabbit who was obviously meant to parody Ah-nold.

                              Here's another pretty weird-feeling game:

                              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRJUxQGFtEY

This adventure game was supposed to be scary but it just felt weird. Most of the time you were scratching your head at the plot and the ghosts were closer to Casper than to Silent Hill. There were two other sequels, but I never even bother lookin in their direction.

Second Katamari Damacy, but it's weird in a sense that it's totally completely awesome.

Haha, I love how they brag about being the developers of a game that looks equally obscure as that one.
