For music mp3's I mostly like 160 kbs and higher mp3s.
I have two mp3 players, a Creative Labs and an Ipod. 128 sounds okay on my Creative Labs but apart from a few exceptions, 128 kbs mp3s sound awful on my Ipod. I also find in general, anything with a lot of drums sounds awful in 128 kbs.
Lower bit rates are fine for spoken word stuff like podcasts and audiobooks, I find. I bought Samantha Bee's I Know I Am But What Are You as a cd audiobook and ripped it at 112 kbs and it still sounded pretty close to the original cds.
When it comes to vinyl I only accept scratched up vinyl on used records a dollar or less.
These days with cds I buy them cheap as possible, rip them as wavs or high bitrate mp3s then sell them, get in store credit or donate them to my local library. I'll only hold on to a physical copy of a cd if it's rare or a in a limited edition box set.
