I'm not sure if this has ever been brought up or not since this is retro site. But I was just wondering about everyone's opinions concerning achievement points. First off I'll say this I'm an average gamer. I'm decent and that's it. So I've never really got the point of grinding through to get your achievements ( unless its an rpg level grinding but that's a different thing.). My point is do you think adding achievement is helpful to gaming or a hinderence? To me it seems like games that are being made have achievements added to the game to hide the fact that a lot of the games seem to be over quicker than they used to be on past systems. Also it just adds more tension like your not a true gamer if you don't get every possible point you can.

I think they're BS, and make it harder to enjoy the game for what it is when you keep trying to do these monotonous tasks just to earn a whole lot of nothing. If games really want to have them, they should just make a few that are easy to get, but some can take hours and I've known people who have gotten really frustrated trying to get just one. It's only for bragging rights from retards who think they actually matter.

I've played a lot of TF2, and since I'd gotten so many achievements (over half) just through playing normally I thought I'd give in and try to get the rest... then I realized how difficult a lot of them were and quickly gave up on that. Happened today, actually. I kind of liked the idea of introducing new weapons, but the game's kinda strayed too far off from what made it great with the stupid class-specific achievements, crafting, trading, and (especially) online store.

Excuse me for going off-topic. But yeah, achievements suck.

I like achievements, they encourage the player to do more on the game.

I hate them. They also make it so other gamers can see how many games you've played, what games you've played, and how many points you've gotten on each game. This causes a need to have to get as many points on as many different games as possible to show off to the other gamers.

Oh well, I hardly play my Xbox360 anyway. I stick mostly to classic games.

True the only games I currently play on my 360 are Dragon Age and SVR 2011. Otherwise I just stick to the older games.

I don't like them, they're worthless. My brother cares about them and i tell him that it's a waste of time because you don't really get anything from getting the achievements. Before i got an xbox 360, i thaught gamerscore and stuff like that meant earning xbox live point by doing ingame tasks, but now i know they're just dumb little things to show off that don't really mean anything. That's one of the reasons why i like the wii more, because it doesn't have achievements.

Everything you said there is a pro, not a con. That's the fun of it! Showing off all that stuff and trying to beat other people's scores is great fun!

I lOVE achievements! It gives me more reasons to play a game. Sometimes I ONLY play games to get achievements. I've actually purchased games that are known to have easy achievements just so I can get them all in 5 min then throw the game in the garbage. I guess I'm an achievement junkie. What's weird though is that I don't care for getting PS3 trophies at all. I have no idea why.

Meh, I already got half the achievements on Counter Strike. Then I got almost half of Pirates, Vikings, and Knights 2 until they updated it. Still want to get 3 kills with fire arrows at once on that game...

Achievements and trophies are worthless to me.

I don't want to make all the effort for just earning "titles or phrases" and points so that other gamers just can see how many points i have that do nothing.

I'd rather want to make an effort to unlock extras in games like extra levels, characters, weapons and stuff like
that.Extras are more rewarding than any trophies or achievements.

unless those points can be used to purchase games from the xbox live arcade, then they'd be worth it. but instead it's microsoft's way of taking away your social life

I been saying the same thing on other forums as well, I would take some of my time to earn points and stuff if I was able to use them to purchase stuff on their markets but no. I find it pretty pointless.

I just looked at my gamerscore last night. Its 5300 or something. I've had my 360 for 2 years. Shows how much I care about achievements.

I love achievements, it gives me a reason to go back and play games for a second and even third time. I think the indie games should have achievements too. They could handle it the way Quake 2 did, achievements that are worth 0 points (you still get an idea of how close to 100% you are in the game).

I'm not an achievement collector, but it does add a little something extra to the games. I also like to compare with my friends, it gives me a good idea of how much time they have spent on certain games as opposed to other games.
