When I first heard this song it made quite an impression on me. The style is unusual, yet this is music that made an interesting backdrop to the the 80's and I can't imagine 80's music without it.

As a further observation, it is still my opinion that "Major Tom" would've made a perfect opening theme for the BBC Sci-Fi series "Star Cops" from 1987. The intro graphics used on this TV show hold up very well, even after all of these years:

How could anyone have a list of 80s music and miss Tears For Fears? They had one of the best anthems for a generation that ever could have ever been written.
I know there's a lot of people here that aren't too fond of country music, but it's still a good song. I have to admit, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas got me into this song. ops:
