In 1972, The Moody Blues released the final album in what has been come to known to their fans as 'the Classic Seven Albums,' Seventh Sojurn. It featured the single I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_J-hmyAS6c

The group actually briefly took a shot at recording an eighth album in 1973. Sessions were quickly abandoned amidst group infighting and after playing live dates in '73 - '74 the group took a hiatus to concentrate on solo work. They regrouped in 1978 but keyboardist Mike Pinder who was so integral to the group sound left the group by the end of '78 and was replaced by Patrick Moraz who'd previously been a member of Yes from '74 to '76 and had also played in Refugee, a spinoff band from the group The Nice.

It's a shame the group didn't complete their '73 album, one song that circulates from the abandoned sessions is the beautiful track Island; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCg3c9o351M

Hey One Louder, dosen't it seem like everything from The Moody Blues should be on a "BEST OF" list on every website? Awesome Band.

Now here's something different from the old school.

Here's a group of guys that have been around even longer that I have, lol.
And they had a hit in the early 70's that dosen't get much recognition today but I bet you guys will like it!

          I love these guys!

Don't ask me to explain it, but I simply loved America ever since their first album.
"Daisy Jane" is still my favorite 70's song but "Ventura Highway" and "Sister Golden Hair" are way more popular.

There's another song that I love just a much as "Daisy Jane" and it's "Today's The Day".
Yes, I know it's a song about nothing but I'm transfixed by it. Maybe its the soft harmonies or the way Dan Peek's voice slightly drops whenever he sings "TODAY". Seriously, take a listen and see if hear it too. Dan's voice seems to do a little distort on every "TODAY" in the song. Kinda cool and strange at the same time but I still think this song deserves a spot on the "Best Songs" list.

          America - "Today's The Day" - 1976:

          (From the album Hideaway)

"Today's The Day" was written by Dan Peek. Dan died on July 24, 2011 at age 60, he's on the right - farthest from the camera. I just wanted to say how much the band America has made life better for me just by being around with their distinctive vocal harmonies.

            - "A Horse With No Name"
            - "Ventura Highway" [the instrumental part of this song was sampled in Janet Jackson's 2001 hit "Someone to Call My Lover"]

                  Thanks Edd.

70's Hard Prog and Proto Metal:

Budgie - Budgie were a major influence on Metallica who later covered some of their songs.

Flash - Formed by guitarist Peter Banks shortly after he was fired from Yes and replaced by Steve Howe. Their first album also featured Yes' original keyboard player Tony Kaye and had a hit with the song

                  Small Beginnings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2vwJBnJq7o.

Home - Featured Cliff Williams prior to his joining AC/DC.

The House on the Hill http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i043gWMKAVg

Pink Fairies - Pink Fairies were very much like a UK version of the MC5 and had a reputation for playing for free outside the fences and gates at festivals. Their song Do It has been covered by many, including Rollins Band and the Wesley Willis Fiasco.

                  Do It http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nagC41Pe4c4

Dust - Dust featured a young Mark Bell on drums who would later become known as Marky Ramone, Tommy Ramone's replacement in the Ramones.

Pull Away/ So Many Times http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB1MqZ4W0gk&feature=related

Hawkwind - Hawkwind were mainly known for long spacey jams but they also put out a couple of great concise non-album singles. Lemmy was a member for a period before his behaviour and a drug arrest led to him being fired from the band and forming his own group, Motorhead. Motorhead were named after a song Lemmy wrote for Hawkwind that appeared on the b-side of one of their singles.

"Heroes" was covered by the Wallflowers in 1998 on the American Godzilla OST, and it is the best Bowie cover I have ever heard.

In addition, I don't know about the other Bowie/Eno works, since Heroes is the only one I can clearly remember. I also liked it when the original Bowie version was used in the intro of NHL 99 on the PC and PS1, since the N64 version used a shorter, and less musically-inclined intro because it did not have the processing power to produce such beautiful FMV that the PS1 could handle.

Blondie also put out a live cover of Heroes on one of their 12 inch singles.

I'm pretty sure Debbie Harry switched the lyrics "For I will be king and you will be queen" around, to a point where they actually became "For I will queen and you will be king.

Here's one that I enjoy very much, and it was even "covered" in The Rugrats Movie with Angelica Pickles singing it in her own words - "One Way or Another"

The Pretty Things - Parachute (1970)

An excellent album from 1970 voted best rock album of that year by Rolling Stone. It's one of the few times I actually kind of agree with them. There's a few cd reissues available that add another album's worth of bonus material I recommend highly. Parachute mostly features the Pretty Things playing much more softly and less raucous than they are usually known for, often sounding like late 60's Beatles or early 70's Pink Floyd but the group couldn't resist putting a couple of tracks in their older blues rock style on side two. Overall it's a great album that should get more recognition.

                                        Side one featured a long medley. Here it is in it's entirety;
