In the late 70's, Television, who helped start the New York Punk scene put out two incredible albums.

The first was Marquee Moon featuring a 10 minute title track that was the centerpiece of Television's live performances http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlbunmCbTBA and Venus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f3d5ZdE4vY&feature=related, which was one of Dee Dee Ramone's favorite songs.

The second was the very underrated Adventure from 1978 featuring the beautiful ballad Carried Away http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIbweWhtLW0.

Pink Floyd in the mid 70's: Wish You Were Here (1975) and Animals (1977)

"After Dark Side of the Moon we'd achieved everything we had wanted to. It was like after successfully pulling off a bank heist. Now what do we do?" - Roger Waters

In 1975 in the midst of recording Wish You Were Here which centered around the epic Shine On You Crazy Diamond http://vimeo.com/24952204, a tribute to Pink Floyd's troubled departed founding member Syd Barrett they had an unexpected visitor, Syd himself. When they saw how much he'd changed they were practically shell shocked.

      Syd Barrett 1967

      Syd Barrett 1975

After hearing some playback of part of the track that Syd's former fellow band mates had dedicated to him, rather than being touched he simply said it sounded "a bit old."

Wish You Were Here also featured two songs about the shallowness and pointlessness of the music industry in the form of Welcome to the Machine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rj2Wv0Yn5eE and Have a Cigar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wP8q0kfnhn8. Pink Floyd brought in their friend Roy Harper to sing lead on Cigar when Roger Waters couldn't get down a lead vocal track to his satisfaction. The title track is one of the group's best ballads http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCQTr8ZYdhg.

1977's Animals was based around some fleshed out versions of songs that Pink Floyd added to their set list on their 1974 tour. They turned them into a loose concept album based around George Orwell's Animal Farm. Unlike it's predecessors Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon or 1979's followup The Wall, Animals does not have songs that have been nearly beaten to death by radio airplay but does have two fan favorites in the form of Dogs and Sheep.

      Animals Full Album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ft7QMuliH2M

The album cover features what became sort of a mascot for the group from then on, an inflatable flying pig. During the Animals cover shoot the large inflatable pig used was meant to be held up in place by rope which would be airbrushed out later. Unfortunately the pig broke free and flew away. There is a story that as it flew away it showed up on air traffic control radar. Luckily some of this was caught on film and it was used in TV ads for the album; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fxx9l5cgXY&feature=related

An excerpt from the 18 minute long Dogs was used in the famous 'turkey drop' episode of WKRP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1enfo8zn3_g.

Aphrodite's Child's final album 666 was released in 1972 but by then the album had actually been completed for nearly a year. Their record label of the time, Mercury were reluctant to release it due to it's subject matter, the book of revelations set to music. After it's release Aphrodite's Child broke up but group leader Vangelis went on to solo success and to make some well loved film scores in the 80's.

666 featured The Four Horsemen with a guitar solo which Eric Clapton openly stated made him jealous, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_WwiwWxDd8&feature=related, incredible passages suchs as Aegian Sea http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkglzwir0yI and the closing track Break which was also released as a single off the album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiS4arlBI9U and although never a major hit was a popular track on European underground radio stations in the early 70's.

Hey guys, ol' Eddie had to take some time off. Guild Navigator's post on RARE EARTH sent me into retro shock.
I'm recovering though, the feeling in my mouse arm is starting to return.

Great to see an awesome mix of artists and songs on this thread. Love the change up between familiar and not-so-familiar. Now I'm ready to add another tune that should be on the familiar side of things. Released in the early 70's, this is a song that I would describe as having "broad shoulders". This is a bold musical statement. And it goes without saying, this song is as far from disco as it can get. Think big band 70's style!

Frank Zappa also recorded an album with a big band in the early 70's. 1972's The Grand Wazoo featured Zappa leading a 20 member band and was an almost entirely instrumental album. The legendary George Duke who had been an on again off again member of Zappa's Mothers of Invention played keyboards.

                    Hey no problem.

Merging Jazz, Pop and Rock together seemed to be one of the through-lines of the 70's, beginning with efforts such as Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, A Tribute to Jack Johnson and On the Corner, and Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters.

Miles Davis - Excerpt from Right Off (From A Tribute to Jack Johnson, 1971) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bRFxSWQ0YU

Herbie Hancock - Watermelon Man (From Head Hunters, 1973) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo5GcYeh7XA

In 1974 Joni Mitchell started to incorporate her love of Jazz into her music. That year's Court and Spark was inspired by a letter she received from John Lennon which stated that her music was brilliant but the reason that others were having hits covering her songs while she wasn't having many hits of her own was that her production wasn't 'candy coated' enough. As a response, Joni Mitchell recruited the Jazz-Rock Fusion band Tom Scott's L.A. Express to back her up and instantly had a hit with

Joni went on to collaborate with Jazz luminaries such as Jaco Pastorius and Charles Mingus.

Guitarist John McLaughlin who had played on many of Miles Davis' late 60's and early 70's albums that merged Jazz and Rock together went on to have success fronting Mahavishnu Orchestra. Mahavishnu Orchestra were much loved by fellow musicians and college students in the 70's.

Another popular 70's Fusion group were Weather Report featuring Wayne Shorter on saxophone and Chester Thompson on drums. Chester Thompson was also in the final lineup of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention before they dissolved the group in 1975 and frequently was a touring musician with Genesis so Phil Collins could concentrate on lead vocals. Their 1977 album Heavy Weather reached number 1 in the Billboard Jazz chart and featured the song that became their calling card, Birdland.

By the late 70's, Phil Collins and Bill Bruford were in Jazz Fusion bands. In 1976 Phil Collins replaced Phil Spinelli in Brand X and stayed on for several albums and appeared live with the band during breaks in Genesis' schedule. Bill Bruford's Bruford was formed during sessions for Bill's 1977 solo album Feels Good to Me and featured Allan Holdsworth and Jeff Berlin. 1979's One of Kind showcases the group at their peak.

Hey GN, it didn't occur to me at first but now I realize that Phantom of the Paradise was inspired by the excellent 1962 Hammer version of "The Phantom of the Opera" starring the wonderful Heather Sears as Christine. Every time I listen to KISS I have the same reaction . . . with makeup or without, these guys are awesome singers. Even in a low-res YouTube upload KISS has a clarity in their vocals that few bands can match. The quality of their diction is unusual in Rock music. And of all the bands that I love from the 70's, KISS earned a well deserved reputation for puttin' on great live concerts.

Many thanks to Coast To Coast AM for bringing this song back to my attention during their coverage of the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. There's a YouTube upload for this song by APyleOfVinyl with excellent audio quality but the volume is too low - so turn up your volume control to catch all the awesome orchestration.
