I don't know if this really smacks of "retro", but back around the mid-to-late 90's when ABC was gearing up for magician David Blaine's first TV special, they ran a very peculiar television spot to promote it, which I cannot find anywhere online. It was simply Blaine standing in front of a wall with a deck of cards in his hand. He flipped the deck in front of the camera and instructed the viewer to pick a card and hold it in their mind. Then, alarmingly, he would pick the very card the viewer (I never saw this ad with anyone else in the room) selected and display it before the camera. I saw this ad a total of three times. The first time I figured it had to be a trick of manipulating the viewer into spotting and choosing a particular card from the deck. So in preparation for its return, I pre-selected a card (king of spades, then the six of hearts, I believe) and would shut my eyes during the part where he flipped through the deck. Both subsequent viewings, Blaine picked the cards I was thinking of. It scared the hell out of me. I should think that someone would have thought to record this bizarre ad when it was going around, but it never seemed to generate that much buzz--which I found frighteningly odd--and I have been unable to track it down since. |
