I just found a few VHS tapes containing recordings (with commercials) from the early 90's but I need to know how to convert them to an electronic file format and who (if necessary) to email them to. I don't want to record over something you may find valuable, so please let me know what to do!

What are the recordings of and what network are they from? I can most likely help you if you really need help.

It was a recording of (don't ask me why I bothered) Short Circuit. I recorded it from a Denver station (channel 2 at the time), therefore it is littered with commercials. I know of at least one national commercial, one Berger King advertisement with an annoying boy who constantly repeats "2 burgers for 2 bucks." I estimate these commercials are from either 1991 or 1992. I'll look closer when I have time for an exact date.
There are other commercials there, but some of them are local car dealerships (cracks me up to see the old vehicles advertised as new). If you are interested in those, I can work with them (given the correct process) as well. Heck, I can give you all the ads for further assortment if you want them. Exclude what you want.

Well the first thing you need in order to encode the clips is either a capture device such as WinTV, which has the video and audio inputs needed to connect your VCR to your computer or you can connect your camcorder to your computer and record the video through a firewire. You would need to connect your camcorder to your VCR and hit record on the camcorder to record the input from the VCR so that the camcorder records it on the mini-tape. Then, you would just firewire what you tape on the camcorder into the computer. (Of course this is tedious and WinTV would be so much easier). Hope this information is helpful and not too confusing...

Thanks for your feedback. Sounds like I may have to scrape some equipment together, but I know some people that may have stuff like that. The only problem then is who to send it to.
It may take me a while to get this stuff, but I know some people who know some people who might just have it!

This is an interesting question, I think I'll put this in the Chit chat part of the forum. Maybe it'll be use ful there.

If anybody out there knows where to send them once they are in electronic format, please let me know!

I thought this would be addressed in the FAQ since this may be an important matter to the site.

We're in the process of preparing to decide on how to figure out how to go about updating the site(other than articles) since Vertex doesn't really have time to do it anymore. Just bear with us and we'll let you know.

Sorry to bother you again, but I too am about to run out of time on this project. I can get the equipment; I just need an address to send it to. I found an email address in the source code on the main page (I won't write it down being it seemed to be slightly encrypted). If this is the corect destination, I can go through with the purcases. Thank you.

You can send them to [email protected] and I will get them on the site.
Just dont try to send your full collection at one time probably 4 or 5 at a time.
And now for something completely different................

This task is harder than it looks! I have purchased winTV and acquired several commercials from my tapes already. It should be within the week that my first post will be made. I have some good ads!

I don't have any video editing software to cut the ends of the commercials, is it alright if I send them with the rough edges (pieces of the following commercials)? I have quite a few!

Actually, if you're running Windows XP, chances are you do, and you just don't know it. Look in your Accessories folder on the Start Menu and see if you have Movie Maker. If you do, you can import clips into it and edit them there.

Windows media encoder(a free download from microsofts website) is also worth having, especially if you need to convert a dvd clip to windows media.

And if you do not want to do the encoding yourself then you can mail the video tape to me and I will encode them for anyone that needs it.

I sent off some emails to the address posted containing several food related clips from the early 90's but haven't gotten a reply or seen them posted. Did they get lost in the transfer?

Okay, I submitted several commercials via the "add new commercial" link. Not the food product commercials from 1991 that were emailed as I described earlier, not the local commercials (a waste of your time I'm sure), but several of the others I have. Let me know if the emails I sent got through. If not, I will submit the food related commercials in the same fashion. Oh, and I also have a movie advertisement for Fried Green Tomatoes, but it’s in crummy shape and I don’t know if you want to see it.

Sorry about that. My email capacity was set too low but that is fixed now.
I did not get any of the ones you sent me by email.
I am working on getting the ones submitted to the site done, so if you submitted it on the site give me a little time to encode them. Sometimes I have over 50 to do.
