    Hi,

How many of you actually remember progressive rock? It's a form of folk-rock which soon took on a life of its own.

Songs that define the genre well:
    *"The Knife" by Genesis (1970)

*"Karn Evil 9" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer (1973)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrnXxeIX1HY (1st Impression part 2; this version recorded in 1977 live in concert in Montreal, during the Works tour)

    *"Try Again" by Supertramp (1970)
    Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwPf4fDeXKI
    Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPEt19U8Le8

*"Song for America" by Kansas (1975)

    *"Lamplight Symphony" by Kansas (1975)

Essential prog-rock bands to check out:
All bands whose songs represent the YouTube links I've posted, plus:
    *Electric Light Orchestra
    *Styx
    *Yes (especially after 1971)
    *Jethro Tull
    *Pink Floyd
*The Nice (Keith Emerson played in this group prior to forming E.L.P.)
*King Crimson (Greg Lake played in this group prior to forming E.L.P.)
*Atomic Rooster (Carl Palmer played in this group prior to forming E.L.P.)
*Rainbow (Cozy Powell was in this group before the first 2/3s of E.L.P. formed Emerson, Lake & Powell with him)
    *Soft Machine
    *Curved Air

I've cited a few more groups to satisfy you.

I'd say Yes were pretty pogressive right out of the gate. On Harold Land off their debut album from 1969 you hear the same type of structure they used later in a much expanded form on the side long title track from Close to the Edge. Also the closing track off the first album, Survival is very similar to bits of Perpetual Change and Heart of the Sunrise (both recorded in '71.)

              Survival;

I didn't see early Genesis (1967 - 1980) on your list either. Their stuff from when Peter Gabriel led them is especially good. It was very influenced by The Nice, King Crimson, Procol Harum and Yes.

King Crimson were a vital band in late 60's and early 70's Prog rock. They both influenced and intimidated alot of other bands in the scene.

Genesis 1967-80? I do have "The Knife" in my original post.

I was looking through these forums for some Prog fans. I've been listening to this genre for about 7 years-ish. Right around when I graduated, but every once in a while I start digging deeper and it's hard to find the rare stuff.

The only way I listen to music is mainly in my car, so I'd love to get a USB turntable (even though the quality is crap) and start buying vinyls again. I did just download some stuff by Camel and Aphrodite's Child which are both great.

More early Genesis songs I like:

                          *Supper's Ready

                          *Firth of Fifth
                          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD5engyVXe0

As to Rush, yes, they too were considered prog-rock. Also check out their fellow Canadians, Saga ("Don't Be Late," "On the Loose").

I see your name comes from Robin Trower's last album on Procol Harum before he went solo!

And no Moody Blues?! That was the band that basically paved the way for Prog Rock. I saw them last summer and I hope to see them again before the Moody Blues retire!
