Those 2 buttons on each side of the controller...
Are they all different buttons are are they 2 sets of the same buttons, 1 for left handers and the other for right handers?
Because I was thinking; if my query is the case, then maybe, to resolve the breaking controller problem, an adaptor to use the Jaguar controllers could be made :) .

do they use the same system?

I know the genesis, atari vcs, master system, etc use the same system.

In the same way, the nes and snes controllers are electronically compatible.

really depends if they're electronically compatible.

There's a reason it's usually picked as the worst controller of all time, the damn buttons break off very easily. You'd probably had better luck trying to adapt a Colecovision controller

        ...if you can find one.

Emulate the system and play the handful of games available for it. :P

the original flex circuits in the atari 5200 controllers were faulty. You can buy rev 9 flex circuits and replace the originals or buy rebuilt ones off ebay, and they will work great. I have done both, there easy to rebuild. The 5200 did have some good games. I have a 4 port and a 2 port version and they work great. The 2 port is better it does not need that special rf switch the 4 port system required. The 4 port was the first version of the 5200, after there was a problem with the rf switch wich the power cable ran through, they decided to release a 2 port version with the traditional switch box rf switch and power port on the back of the system. After both of these problems, the Atari 5200 got a bad rap, Atari gave up on it and built the Atari 7800 wich was a improvement.
