The only one that comes to mind right away is The Ninth Gate. Polanski took a lot of liberties but the story was more provocative than the book it is based on, The Club Dumas.

I took as "hobby" a few years ago to read a book (if i like it of course) before been adapted on screen. Since then I haven't seen a movie better than the book.

I think there are some factors to be consider for this reason.

Literature is subjective (specially fiction) so its difficult to delight everyone... Hollywood/film directors persistence in mainstream money-making audience stumping out the book's mood/tone... the difficult task to do a script based on a story/novel wich in most cases are quite lengthy.

Also if you happen to be a big fan of the author/book is most likely you end up dissapointed as I have been with some books... I'm a big fan of C.L.Dodgson (Lewis Carroll)and no luck so far though there has been some good adaptations.

Actually yeah, Last of the Mohicans (Daniel Day Lewis) was way better than Fenimore Cooper's novel...Cooper just couldn't romanticize well...the film is much more emotional, engaging, thought provoking, better paced, and has better dialogue...and THAT SCORE!!!

This is why so many movies today suck. There are alot of great scripts out there that get shred to pieces by producers because of the budget. The higher your budget, the less say you have in your film, thus all flash no substance.

^ Exactly[!]... and sometimes even the scripts are already fucked up before the producer/director's intrution.

Another one i just thought of is JAWS. The book was slow and uninteresting compared to the movie.

DUDE. The book was cool. But come on JURASSIC PARK. I'm sure Timbox will agree.

All you gotta do is say the word "Dinosaur" and he starts whacking himself while making an 80-page long post about how awesome they are. He's biased.
Sure the movie had it's cool moments here and there (like that intense kitchen scene with the raptors), but the book had more of them :)

Hammond dies at the hands of "compies", which don't even make an appearance in the movie.
