Let me begin by saying that I am in no way an actual movie critic. I have no idea how "movie critics" get those jobs. There is no degree that you go to college to get where you can sit and watch three hour movies all day and make it a career choice. With that being said there was a tremendous amount of hype that went into this movie, with several actual critics saying that it will change the way we look at films...Well, I'll tell you right now that this movie does no such thing.
I will spoil it right now and say that I didn't like this movie and I'll get to why I didn't like it in a second. However for those who think of it as a masterpiece I will say that I can understand how you can think of it in that way. For one thing you obviously must see this movie in 3-D as this was apparently the way this movie was filmed using some sort of 3-D technology, even though real life is in 3-D. But trust me, with this movie the 3-D really seems more like an added ploy to get a huge audience to see the movie. Anyway I will keep the rest of this review brief so I won't bore anyone to death, and go ahead with my criticism of Avatar starting with what I liked about the film and then tell what I didn't like about it.
Pros
1.This movie is very, very colorful. The environments fill the screen with vibrant environments and colorful inhabitants of Pandora. Earth is never shown in the entire film, but we must assume since we all live on earth that we already know what it looks like. Earth makes an appearance from outer space, although that may be a similar planet. Oh and flashbacks possibly take place on earth.
2.Neytiri is a very good character and should be considered as the main protagonist in the story, even though that is Jake Sully. I found myself being more drawn to her character than to Jake simply because of the way the story went. I really felt emotional with her and really caring about her character far more than the others that appear in the film.
Well there's what I liked about it, now here is everything that I didn't like...
Cons
1.The political message in this movie is so obviously blatant and forces itself down your throat like some sort of medicine that you don't want to take. I can't stand it when political messages and movies have to intertwine and become meshed together. Even though the message is a good one, it doesn't matter. I can't stand how there are those who think that their views are superior to somebody else. I go to the movies to escape my everyday life not to be brought back into it. I definitely don't want to be told how to think when I'm watching a movie. It's almost like this movie was some sort of propaganda.
2.Ripping off ideas from so many different movies it's hard to count. Yeah I realize that Hollywood has officially run out of imagination, but seriously this movie uses ideas from countless other films in the past. In Avatar there is the idea that everything has a spirit. Gee that was original when I first heard it in Pocahontas. There is also the whole concept of some "evil corporation trying to take over the forest" to extract some valuable substance to satisfy their own greed. Hmmmmm sounds like Fern Gully and Ernest Goes to Camp.
3.Minor things such as the casting of three actors that I can't stand Michelle Rodriguez, Joel Moore, and Giovanni Ribisi. There is also the main villain at the end that is given superhuman strength at the end. James Cameron should have just made him made of liquid metal. I won't say who the main villain becomes to avoid spoiling anything. There are other minor things but I don't want to spoil anything here in this review.
There is my long but also brief review I could go into more detail. I don't want to ruin anything for those who haven't seen it yet. Overall you might as well watch it for what it is which is a technical achievement. To be fair however, I thought that Final Fantasy The Spirits Within was more impressive with it's technology and it came out nearly ten years ago. Avatar seems like a synopsis of what Hollywood has become all style and no substance. Sure technology has become greater but does that mean that the stories have to be lousy. Watch the original Star Wars then watch Episode One and notice how the both differ. Sure the effects in Episode One is better but do you really care about the characters as much as Luke, Han, and Chewie? I just feel that Hollywood should spend more money on better ideas than on better computers. Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No

You know I never saw it at the time, but James Cameron's movies have always had some what of a liberal, new age tone to them. Even Titanic and Terminator II did! I have not seen this movie, but want to just because it's supposed to be one of the best 3D films ever. Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No - 4 years 11 months ago

This movie was the highest-grossing movie of 2009
It's also in the top 10 of highest grossing movies of all time.

Hmm...I see your hate for that movie is deeper than I couldve understood. (see grind my gears forum)
Despite the reused story, I enjoyed the visuals and the long fight scene at the last hour of the movie. What can I say? The way he used that dragon-bird to swing those helicopters at the other helicopters, the long-awaited Hammerhead Rhinoceros stampede, where that guy knocked off those other guys off the mothership and Jake Sully Vs. guy in a Mech Suit made me very happy.
and because this is the internet, i want to say that those Na'vi were very sexy. Their indiginous, feline charm left me aroused as i left the theatre today, especially that one that he had sex with...for life. and Michelle Rodriguez was in it, she too was hot...and Sigourney Weaver may be old but, same thing. Are you sure you want to delete this post? Once a blue moon, there's a movie that comes out that just pisses you off everytime you even think about it. That's the movie for me. I'm not offended by much, but that movie is so offensive to me on so many levels (and no it's not because of the Jar-Jar Binks robots).
A person could murder my entire family right in front of me and I STILL wouldn't hate that person more than that movie. So yes, it is very deep.knuclear200x wrote:Despite the reused story, I enjoyed the visuals and the long fight scene at the last hour of the movie. What can I say? I just don't understand where all the "OMG the story was sooooo overdone dis movie sux!" talk is coming from. A story similar to this has been used in like, what, 10 movies in the past decade, with only half of them even being mainstream? Nah it isn't the most 1000000000000% original movie ever made, but what is nowadays for real? It's nearly impossible to come up with something COMPLETELY original without drawing some kind of comparison to a piece of work to the past.
I for one believe that if you can retell a story we've heard before, tweak it a little here and there, and present it in a unique and interesting way, then you've got something good on your hands. That's what I felt when watching Avatar. No it's not Greatest Movie Ever, but it did what it said out to do. Retell a timeless tale and blew everyone waaaaaaaaay out of the water with the epic visuals and their attention to detail to what's supposed to be a brand new world. (you can't deny that without looking 12 years old).
Bottom line: This movie did what it set out to do in a fantastic way. You can nitpick the film all you want to justify your hate, but that just seems naive to me.knuclear200x wrote:and because this is the internet, i want to say that those Na'vi were very sexy. Yea I know, and that's perfectly fine. I was talking about those people who just hate on the entire movie because they nitpick at one aspect of it that wasn't perfect, JUST to be that "different" guy who "refuses to follow the crowd by doin his own thing." It's so fake and annoying. Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No

It was better than Titanic, had shit getting blown up and it was in 3D. Sure, there were some hackneyed and cliche moments, but I went into this one knowing it was basically an awesome serving of eye-candy. I'm just glad to see James Cameron moving away from stories involving water. Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No - 4 years 10 months ago

People have a love/hate view of Avatar. On the one hand, you have people who love it because it's just a really enjoyable movie to watch, and they don't care about the political message or the story similarities to Dances with Wolves and Fern Gully. On the other hand, you have people who allowed the story and political message drive them to the point of absolutely hating the movie. There are also some people who refuse to see the movie altogether because of how hyped up it, and they actually think they are making some kind of stand by not seeing it.
The movie has now made over $1.6 billion worldwide, and will most likely break Titanic's record of $1.8 billion. However, you have to take into consideration that the average movie ticket back in 1997 when Titanic came out was $4 - $6, while now it is $10 - $14...and most people are paying $14 because they are seeing it in 3D. The box office record charts never take those kinds of things into consideration when they rank the all time highest movie grosses. Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No

Why would it matter if elements of this movie have been used before? When was the last time someone made a movie without plotlines, shooting techniques or themes that weren't first thought of by someone else? The 1940s? Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No

Yes I agree... this movie is worth watching because of the 3D and the eye candy scenes. But it can be a bit irritating when cliche/mainstream topics are used somewhat deliberately.
I think is over-hyped... many people gat over exited when this kind of films are made. There has been other movies before and will be some more like this in the years to come... so is nothing new I think. Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No

THE MOST RIDICULOUS AS WELL AS UNINTENTIONALLY HILARIOUS SCENE!
I say so because earlier in the movie when Jake is warned about not shooting the CGI-rhino thingy because its skin was too thick and we saw that when he nearly empties his entire clip into it.
The guy in the mech-suite kills by stabbing it which meant he used a lot of force, but he fights Jake's Avatar like they are equal?? Talk about giving physics the middle finger!
Another unintentionally hilarious scene was neytri yells "YOU ARE NOT ONE US!" but when under attack her mom says "PLEASE IF YOU ARE ONE OF US, HELP US!"retromaniac wrote:There are also some people who refuse to see the movie altogether because of how hyped up it, and they actually think they are making some kind of stand by not seeing it.
I think thats what killed it for me; all the hype. I guess I was expecting too because within the first 30 minutes I already knew the plot. Heck, even the cartoon is way smarter than this flick.Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air?

It's not as bad as people claim to be. The effects, acting, action, and story were all good. I didn't see anything wrong with it. There is a battle between two wolves inside us all.
One is evil and the other one is good. Which wolf will win? The one you feed the most.
