*** WARNING*** ***SPOILERS ***
I admit the first half of Hostel was cliche'd and felt like a campy horror flick, however the idea that there is a place setup where people pay to do anything they want to inflict any kind of nastiness that their heart desires is somewhat unique in a film, in my opinion, however the idea alone is a really scary thought in itself, namely because I can see something like that really existing somewhere right now. There are some extremely sick networks in the world, so it definitely wouldn't surprise me if such a place actually existed in some form. To me, that aspect added tremendously to what would otherwise be a pointless display of blood and gore. Not to mention the protagonist was fairly believable and put on a good performance later in the show.
I'm not saying there aren't movies out there that are more graphic. Strangeland was originally given an NC-17 rating, by the way. I'm just saying it's definitely a lot more graphic than 90% of the horror movies I can think of, that are worth watching.
The second half of the movie was really intense, though, and made up for the slow beginning. The movie is graphically too extreme for the typical horror fan though, in my opinion.
