First a little background: For anyone who knows me knows I can't stand Dreamworks animated movies. Now I do love the first Shrek and the second was pretty decent (the third was shit) and the films they made with the Wallace and Gromit guys were great, however thats were it ends. I hate Shark Tale with a passion (It's basically an example of what's wrong with every animated film today), Madagascar and it's sequel are filled with nothing but pop culture references (That's almost every Dreamworks film mind you) and finally, Over the hedge was the worst film I had seen in 2006. Last year, Dreamworks released Kung Fu Panda, I saw the previews to it and upon seeing the Dreamworks logo, I skiped it. “Just another shallow, pop culture induced Dreamworks film.” I thought. Well to be honest, I appreciated the look of the film (I love asian culture) I still thought it would be stupid. So anyway earlier this summer I was senting around at my friends house with nothing to do. My friend mentioned he had HBO (As I do not) so I turned it to the channel and what be on but of course 'Panda. But you know what? It wasn't that bad. To get more into detail, it was very enjoyable and to be honest I would much rather watch this than Cars (That's alot coming from a Pixar fanboy.) The story was great, a little cliche but good none the less. The look of the film was breathtaking. This movie handled the look and feel of China much better than say Mulan. The casting for the most part was pretty good, Jack Black fit Po like a glove and Dustin Hoffman as Shi-fu worked as well. As far the furious five go, I thought Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan worked as well. Now to sound racist or stereotypical but I feel the Crane and the Manthis should have been played by asian actors too (Seth Rogan is completely out of place in this movie.) Also as far as Tigress and the villian (Can't remember his name) go, I think it would have been awesome if Uma Thurman had voiced Tigress and the late David Carradine voiced the villian. All and all, this is a good animated film and should be an example for what Dreamworks films should be like.
It's no Wall-E, but it's better than Cars.
