This a cliche question to ask, but in the Stanley Kubrick film, "The Shining", what was the meaning behind the scene with the man in a bear costume in the room?

Read the book or a review of the bear scene from the book.

Vintage Fantasy: The Shining movie by Stanley Kubrick was originally a book written by Steven King. The book goes into greater detail about the bear costume, but I wouldn't want to spoil it for you by telling you. The scene you ask about doesn't really seem to fit in with the movie, but Kubrick might have left the scene in because it leaves an unsettling feeling and makes you wonder about the disturbed past of the Overlook Hotel or maybe, the rest got edited out or it was all a clever ploy devised by Steven King in order to get you to buy and read the his novel so that you can find out for yourself.

It wasn't a ploy by Stephen King, he hated Kubrick's movie, to the point where King went as far as to get a three part TV mini-series made in 1997.
