Even with a brand new unscratch DVD, we get skips or pauses while playing the DVD on the Playstation 2. Is this a common thing? The dvds play fine on my regular dvd player.

I didn't expect the highest quality dvd player with the ps2, but this is just annoying. I think it's about 50/50 at this point. We also have the ps2 model that was released in 2002 or 2003. Supposedly certain "bugs" and problems were to be fixed with them. Yeah right.

I've never had any problems playing DVDs on my PS2, which is the older style one. I've heard that you shouldn't use it as your primary DVD player, though, because you can wear out the drive prematurely, but none of the stuff your talking about.

No problems with mine, but I use my PS2 to play games. That's what video game consoles were made. To play games.

The DVD feature is more of a gimmick to make the system look better really. I wouldn't trust it as your main player. I haven't had any problems with mine (not that I've used DVD's in it much) but my friend has gone through 2 consoles now and has had DVD problems with both. You can pick up great players really cheap these days.

Sony makes terrible hardware, period. I have a $400 PS2, a $650 Mavica, and a $450 DVD player, all dead, and all of them have the same problem. Failed drives.

Actually, yes, I have. However, upon further inspection, we all found out that the PS2 was actually clogged with dust and therfore dying on us  But, happy ending, we got a new one, and it plays DVDs just fine 8)

I wouldn't mind that much. We have a good TV that my dad bought somewheer in the 80's it's our biggest TV. But your not suppose to mess with the back since it messes up the TV video.
My brothers have the ps2 connected to that TV unfortunately.

Our PS2 wouldn't play certain DVD's like Lord of the Rings for some reason.

My family has had bad luck with Sony electronics as well. We've had two Sony televisions that went on the fritz quite quickly as well as a cordless phone that I have cursed at more times than I can count.

I've never had bad luck out of Sony, but they're becoming too evil lately...

On that note, my dad can sit up for hours on end playing MVP Baseball 2k5 without a problem, and my PS2'll just truck right along. Doesn't have problems playing DVD's either. :D

i did some research and found out 2 things:

1: the models for the years 2000-02 had problems with the dvd player wearing out, which resulted in a complete wearout of the drive itself, making it impossible to listen to cds, play games or watch movies

2: 2003-2004(not including the skinny ps2), sony made a delibrate decision to fix this problem by using CHEAPER dvd playing hardware. the theory was that if u burnt them out, u can send them in for free since theyre so cheap. doing so=happy customers. happy customers=profit. right? wrong.

the thing is the new dvd player hardware is SO cheap that it cant read certain formats of dvds, certain encodings, certain copy encryptions and SOMETIMES just plain didnt work. but u could still play games.

the thing about the skinny ps2 is the same for the original ps2's from 2000-02, u can wear it out. BUT sony did fix the skinny one by micosizing everything, effectively making it "cost-effective" to have it burn out. dont ask me why they put it that way, they just did. i dont get it myself....

technology to make the circuit boards like that in the first place didnt exist, qui pro, too expensive to produce/sell. however, its an excellent economic stradegy for a product that is dying....make it sleeker, slimmer and more sexy before the new one comes out....brilliant!

ya, economics was a required course i hated in high school....

oh yeah, thats right, they came out with a smaller, sexier psone. also, they gave you an LCD screen, 2 controllers and a power adapter (for car and home) so u could play it anywhere...all that for the original price of a psone, 150 dollars! it was a sweet deal....
