It began with two movies, Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Joe Dante's Gremlins. One has a slave getting his heart ripped out of his chest by the leader of the cult who worshipped the Hindu god, Kali, while the other (Gremlins) has some monster explode in a microwave. There was widespread outrage and uproar over such excessive violence that occur in movies released 25 years ago. Even the Motion Picture Assocation of America was besieged by bitching, moaning, and even backlash and complaints from those (and even parents of those who are young children in 1984) who are pissed off at such virtual chambers of horrors, and who wanted their young kids to see a modern Disney-style film. and so the solution to this entertainment unrest came on this month 25 years ago, when the MPAA welcomes the PG-13 rating to its rating system. Here's a picture for the PG-13 rating logo:

The first movie ever to be released with such rating was the 1984 MGM action movie, Red Dawn (which a bunch of high school students that I've met wanted to remade as something like the Skyler Project, you may see their remake of Red Dawn here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ipy2NkJDvo)

So, do you recall memories of the origins of the PG-13 rating 25 years ago? What cause the PG-13 rating to come to be? What's your favorite PG-13 rated films? What's your pros and cons about the PG-13 rating? Well, what's your thoughts on the PG-13 rating and memories of how it came to be?

Yes, I do. I was seven years old at the time, and my parents wouldn't let me see any PG13 films for another four years or so.

I think that's pretty obvious. The MPAA needed a rating for films that were too excessive for a PG rating, but not excessive enough for an R rating. I think it was a good move.

So many to choose from. It is the official rating for Hollywood blockbusters.

I think it's a good rating for teenagers who don't want to watch kid movies. However, it's become a crutch for film makers. A lot of times, a film with be rated PG13 because the producer doesn't have the balls to make an R rated film. Artistically, the film usually suffers because of it.

A vast majority of the fims released today are PG13, and they make more money than all the rest.

I heard a rumor floating around this time last year that the MPAA were actually toying around with a new rating to put between R and NC17 called "Hard R" which would basically take the role that R rated movies have now and drop the R to be little more lenient. I haven't heard anything else on it since then though so it seems that it was indeed just a rumor and a silly one at that.

I heard this as well, and that's because of movies like "Hostel" or "Saw". I kind of agree with it, because there's a world of difference between movies that have the F-word a few times and movies where you watch a killer brutally torture and cut someone to pieces in full detail.

Same here. This shit waiting for the unrated DVD to come out is just a way for them to make more money. Then the unrated verson will have only a few extra scenes.

Anyway, movie ratings are load of bullocks.

I disagree with that movie ratings have there place, the real problem comes from the bias that the MPAA has towards certain movies and companies. They are completely inconsistent with the ratings they give out giving on movie a PG-13 for the exact same thing they would give another movie a R for. If you haven't seen the documentary "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" then I highly recommend watching it has it addresses what I just talked about in great detail.

I believe movies should still have little tags like "Blood, gore, rape, language, etc." but some people couldn't see a NC-17 movie because of their age. If they have the money to see a movie, they should be able to see it, no matter what Tippor Gore or any mentally unstable soccer mom has to say.

I'll agree 100% the MPAA has caused the ratings system that we know to fail. The system needs a more strick rating system that is consistant with all of their movies. If they adopted a rating system closer to the ESRB's rating system it would be much better off.

I concur, the ESRB is 100% better than the MPAA.
