Guys, enough about Hayden Panettiere! As for the everybody hates Birth of a Nation topic, anyway, the truth is that it portrayed negative and racist stereotypes against African Americans and presented the Ku Klux Klan as saviors of white society. The National Assocation for the Advancement of Colored People protested this. It sparked mass protests and a whole lotta race riots across the nation and it was even refused a release in many US cities. That's the truth about why everybody hates Birth of a Nation!
P.S. It also induced D.W. Griffith to answer criticism on the movie with a 1916 silent epic called Intolerance which intercuts back and forth between 4 stories, one set in 1916, the second, about the fall of Babylon, the third predating Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ (about the last 12 hours of Jesus Christ) but in a less violent way, and the fourth one about St. Bart's Day (which is really those Catholic guys beating up the Hugenots in the southern part of France in the 1500's, while the Hugenots were partying during a wedding).
