Of course all of you will be discouraged from this, but I have a question just for you...

Why is D.W. Griffith's 1915 3-hour silent epic, The Birth of a Nation, very, very, very, VERY controversial? And why did everybody hates Birth of a Nation? Well, please tell me why everybody did so?

I hate it because Hayden Panettiere isn't in it.

Why's it controversial? That second picture should be your first clue.

The only thing I didn't like about Birth of a Nation is its length.

THANK you. Coulda been watchable with her in there.

Oh, and the roles the black dudes got in there....they had nothing to work with. I mean they were decent actors but their lines were nothing but grunts and monkey noises.....highly disappointing film.

Guys, enough about Hayden Panettiere! As for the everybody hates Birth of a Nation topic, anyway, the truth is that it portrayed negative and racist stereotypes against African Americans and presented the Ku Klux Klan as saviors of white society. The National Assocation for the Advancement of Colored People protested this. It sparked mass protests and a whole lotta race riots across the nation and it was even refused a release in many US cities. That's the truth about why everybody hates Birth of a Nation!

P.S. It also induced D.W. Griffith to answer criticism on the movie with a 1916 silent epic called Intolerance which intercuts back and forth between 4 stories, one set in 1916, the second, about the fall of Babylon, the third predating Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ (about the last 12 hours of Jesus Christ) but in a less violent way, and the fourth one about St. Bart's Day (which is really those Catholic guys beating up the Hugenots in the southern part of France in the 1500's, while the Hugenots were partying during a wedding).

You completely missed my point, Timbox129. If Hayden Panettiere were cast in D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation, it would have better shown the class struggle between the blacks and the whites.

As evidenced by her role in Bring It On: All or Nothing, Hayden helped bring the privileged, white American experience to the urban landscape.

I feel as if Griffith made a serious error in not casting her for his film.

Look, the real reason why everyone hates the Birth of a Nation is that it portrays negative stereotypes against African Americans and presented the Ku Klux Klan as heroes and saviors of white society. Go read Filmsite's review of the Birth of a Nation, so I can prove you wrong.
