Who here agrees with the Blender magazine editors about Starship's first #1 single as being the worst song ever?

    The review:

    Artist/group: Starship
    Song: We Built This City
    Year: 1985

Rap sheet: The lyrics of "We Built This City" appear to restate the importance of the band once known as Jefferson Airplane within San Francisco's '60s rock scene. Not so, says former leader Grace Slick, who by 1985 had handed her band to singer Mickey Thomas and a shadowy team of outside songwriters.

"Everybody thought we were talking about San Francisco. We weren't," said Slick. "It was written by an Englishman, Bernie Taupin, about Los Angeles in the early '70s. Nobody was telling the truth!"

Certainly not Starship, who spend the song carrying on as if they invented rock 'n roll rebellion, while churning out music that encapsulates all that was wrong with rock in the '80s. Sexless and corporate, it sounds less like a song than something built in a lab by a team of record company executives.

The result was so awful that years afterward, it seems to bring on a personality disorder in the woman who sang it. "This is not me," Slick remarks when reminded of the 1985 chart-topper. "Now you're an actor. It's the same as Meryl Streep playing Joan of Arc."

Worst moment: "Who cares, they're always changing corporation names," sneers Slick -- whose band had changed its name twice.

    ~Ben
"I am such a purist for old information on anything '70s and '80s."

I know what they are getting at with being a really corny, cheesy song. But to name it the worst song of all time of any music is a little absurd. If you think about it, how can you even have a worst song list? What is the limit. Because how could a song written by a teenager who can't sing or play or write be considered a better song than We Built This City? You see what I mean?
You dont know them but they do!!

It's not the worst song ever written, but it IS pretty terrible. In a good way.

My dad used to play the album it was on, Kneedeep in the Hoopla along with it's followup, No Protection alot in the car. Kneedeep has worse songs that Built This.... The album closer, the overlong dirge Love Rusts is the worst cut on the album as far as I'm concerned. Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now off No Protection raises a smile from me if I overhear it on the radio or PA when I'm at the grocery store or waiting for an appointment or something. I haven't heard it lately. Those two albums have three songs I like between them, all the tracks where Grace Slick sings lead, the Joan Jett-esque rocker Rock Myself to Sleep off Kneedeep and I Don't Know Why and Babylon off No Portection. Babylon was the only Starship track from the '85 - '87 Starship lineup that wasn't written by an outside contributor. It was one of Grace's songs.

Cities are built out of mortar and steel...not rock, nor roll.

Yeah, someone should write a song about THAT!

Rock and roll only makes young people want to rut.

What about "We built this city on a complex network of concrete foundations and underground support structures."

                        Yeah!

I remember it being immensely popular when it came out. My sister bought the 45 record and we tried to figure out the lyrics which was difficult in spots. I thought it was a fun song.

I always imagined it to mean that the construction workers were playing rock music on the radio while they worked on building the city. Hence, they built it on rock n' roll!

A 45 is a short playing record, sometimes also known as a vinyl single or 7 inch single. 45 refers to the rpm the record plays at on a turntable. Full length 12 inch vinyl albums play at 33 1/3 rpm, 7 inch singles play at 45 rpm. 7 inch singles can only hold upto about seven and half minutes of music per side.

I like the song. In my opinion Blender Magazine just hates music. I'm not saying its true it's just an opinion.
