Who remembers the 1978 #2 hit "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty, a Scottish singer who had previously been the frontman for Stealers' Wheel and the Humblebums?

It was noted for returning the saxophone to the face of the popular music world in over 50 years, and ignited the so-called "Baker Street phenomenon," which made saxophone sales rise, and compelled other musicians and groups to include sax solos in their songs; among them: Supertramp's most far-reaching US hit, 1979's "The Logical Song," which made #6 here.

The iconic eight-bar sax line in "Baker Street" was originally intended to be played on a guitar, but the one guitarist who was to supposed to have done his solo during the song's recording sessions didn't show up in time, so the other guitarist stored an alto sax as part of his contingency plan, and recorded the solo using that instrument instead.

This song was actually on the radio today when I was coming back home. I remember it when I was younger playing on the Jubebox in the pub.
