i think there is a difference between carded toys and boxed toys.
if a toy is carded, you can actually see the figure, and if you're not intending to play with it (can't imagine any adults will do...) just keep it carded. while carded (and properly stored) the figure doesn't really age. loose on a shelf will get them covered in dust and all other external factors will have a negative effect on the condition of the toy.
however, when a toy is boxed (and factory sealed) (and the box doesnt have a display) you can never be 100% sure the toy is in the box.
i never opened any of my carded figures, but i opened almost all my boxed figures and vehicles, just to check the insides. only my most precious items i kept factory sealed, never to know whether the toy is actually there or not... not that i'm intending to sell it someday, but, and i know it sounds a bit crazy, i think that what most collectors want is to keep the toy as mint as possible
