System 8 years 2 months ago Posts: 74809	i think there is a difference between carded toys and boxed toys. if a toy is carded, you can actually see the figure, and if you're not intending to play with it (can't imagine any adults will do...) just keep it carded. while carded (and properly stored) the figure doesn't really age. loose on a shelf will get them covered in dust and all other external factors will have a negative effect on the condition of the toy. however, when a toy is boxed (and factory sealed) (and the box doesnt have a display) you can never be 100% sure the toy is in the box. i never opened any of my carded figures, but i opened almost all my boxed figures and vehicles, just to check the insides. only my most precious items i kept factory sealed, never to know whether the toy is actually there or not... not that i'm intending to sell it someday, but, and i know it sounds a bit crazy, i think that what most collectors want is to keep the toy as mint as possible

UncleJohn 8 years 2 months ago Posts: 163	Im no expert but if its "factory sealed" then you dont need to worrie bout if the toys in there or not. Factory seal may be glue, and the box would been in a plastic shrink wrap, if its been taped then its not factory sealed and thus yea open it and check. Now some companied did use tape so just check and look for any other bits of tape, if you can tell that its been retaped, open it and check.. But yea if its factory sealed no sence opening it just to find out if it really is sealed.lol Its normaly pretty obvious if a box has been broken open.

System 8 years 2 months ago Posts: 74809	you're right about wrappings etc... but, e.g., all ghostbusters boxed were only taped close in the factory.. therefor you can easiely open them, replace the inside and seal them again with the same kind of tape. also, i own some so called 'flat' boxes. i could fold them, put in some junk, tape it close just like in the factory and sell it for a shitload of money.

UncleJohn 8 years 2 months ago Posts: 163	Well main problem then if its just "taped" closed, its not air tight, so ya really dont benefit from it being boxed anyway sept to prevent scratches and what not, but dust can get in there. I just dont really concider something sealed unless its been glued, or shrink wraped closed.

System 8 years 2 months ago Posts: 74809	true.. but the main reason I'm keeping it taped closed is that I want the toy (including the box) to be as original as possible, despite of the fact that it will get dusty etc. (only a little though.. )

[orange cards then green cards] i bought doubles so i could open them all...I had to open all the ships i bought and of course not opening a mcfarlen toy is a crime....but i just got a carded empire strikes back death star commander...i will never open that.

I worked a summer at my uncles auction house and this guy only bidded on figures that were out of package. Becuse it reminds him of how his son used to play with them.

mrignut 7 years 11 months ago Posts: 1	I've been collecting Marvel Legends,Spawn and Mcfarlane Sportspicks for 6 years now, and there is a large number of collectors that buy figures opened. In the latest series of Marvel Legends each figure comes with a piece of the theme figure like a head or an arm of the series named Villian such as the modoc and mojo figure series. I sell hear and there but i open a few to take a good look at them hey if I choose to sell the opened figures at least i got to play with the darn things. If you are a real collector and not just planning to do the 40 year old virgin E-bay thing for the money open the figures. Join the dark side!!!

sikkbones 7 years 11 months ago Posts: 1263 Globally Banned	depends on the item.... most of my Boxed 2002 Motu will be opened when they show up under the tree when my son turns 5. however the carded original 8 commerative Motu i bought back in 2000 will probaly not be opened because i have several loose figures of the same character with the exception of a few.
