i am starting to collect any and all media worth saving by my standards and found this site hoping to find others doing the same but not sure anyone is doing it my way. i am trying to gather digital copies (computer files) of as much great old movies and tv as possible. if there are other here that are interested and want to start posting and trading with torrents or e-mail whichever left me know. i have over 800gb right now of data and climbing hope some of you are willing to help with my media retention project or i might be able to help with yours.

as one of the other users had posted if it is not being sold and item that have been on tv can be openly shared. it is getting ridiculous with bs prosecution, say you tape a show on tv and give it to a friend should you be arrested? why it is something made publicly available are we not allowed to record thing from tv anymore? why dont we backdate a law like that and just arrest everyone. all i want to do is retain popular tv shows and movies that not enough people care about to keep in circulation. everyone that is here is here because they love old shows the items or the classic living idea, people like us want to keep such things alive why put me and my idea down. anyone interested can look up if the sharing of the specific media would be in violation of a current copyright or ownership, and as i said anything that has been put on tv should be freeware media.

I don't believe that trading, as in "I've got a vhs tape of a bunch of shows off tv, and I'll trade you for the same" is really illegal, though not completely legal. The feds won't bother on such a small scale. It's a gray area. People have been trading shows (mostly through the mail, however), for a long time.
Once you introduce P2P into the mix, however, you are distributing shows to the masses, as anyone can grab a file or torrent, and you no longer trading one tape with one person, you are distributing it to hundreds of people, and they do the same, and so on.
So trading tapes within a circle of like collectors is considered ok, but when you post something online for everyone to grab, you sort of cross the line in a "legal" sense.
Besides, half the stuff I see online is horribly converted low quality files, and if you are talking about retaining or preserving media, you would want the best quality available.

Here are some "Tape Trading" facts:
