There was no sword in the stone, the sword was in an anvil that was setting on a stone, and that sword was not Excalibur. I don't remember if it had a name or not, but Arthur broke it in battle. It was then that Merlin took him to the Lady of the Lake, from whom he obtained the legendary Excalibur.
There's another incorrect question on here as well.
Arthur didn't go anywhere after his death, because accourding to legend, he never died. He was mortally wounded in his battle with Mordrid, and Merlin took him to the mystical island of Avalon to rest. Arthur vowed that one day, when the land needed him again, that he would return to reclaim his sword and his crown. After he went to Avalon, Excalibur was returned to the Lady of the Lake.
