Let's name some well known bands that are masochistic, seemed to have sabotaged themselves, never reached the level of success that they could have, or never retained the level they once had.
I'll start with Anthrax, I know they are an easy target but they have screwed themsleves over so many times it's unbelievable.
1) They fired Joey when they were on the brink of getting to the "next" level. No, they wouldn't have achieved Metallica status, but Megadeth or Slayer level was surely a reality. I love John Bush, and prefer his stuff, but this was a bad move at the worst possible time.
2) They signed with Elektra. Why would you sign to the same label that is the home to your biggest competitor? Yeah, I'm sure Elektra was gonna funnel money to promote Anthrax when Metallica was their cash cow. I hope these guys made this decision on their own, and weren't advised, cause I would want some sort of restitution from whoever said it was a good idea.
3) Next they sign with a label owned by a declining rap label. Great move. And this was when CD's still sold.
4) They put out a great album, WCFYA, then decide to jump on the reunion band wagon, though no one really cares if they reunite. It, of course, is all hinged on the hope of getting on Ozzfest, which doesn't pan out. So they fuck over John, do a pathetically attended reunion tour with Joey, insinuate a reunion album, then burn that bridge again.
5) Instead of calling it a day, they get a new singer who sounds like every other generic metal cookie monster dude from the past 15 years. I see a bright future.
It sucks cause as much as $cott and Charlene are total ill advised jackasses, they can write some good shit. I guess playing to good crowds overseas and in South America wasn't good enough. They should have said fuck the trendy US fans and just kept doing their thing overseas with John. Instead they will continue to chase a brass ring that isn't even there for them anymore. Sad, sad, sad.
Who else has fucked up as much as 'Thrax? Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No

Metallica seem to have sabbotaged themselves over and over again.
--After their self-titled album debuted they went on tour with Guns 'N Roese as an opening act; which I thought was really quite beneath them, and after the tour stops in Montreal they had to take James to the hospital because of an accident on stage where a pyrotechnic misfired and burned his hands. Then Guns didn't go on stage causing a riot that got Toronto's GNR show cancelled.
-- Making their music more poppy; aka selling out to their record label. Their music was perfect the way that it was and they just gave into this corporate bullshit.
-- The Napster Lawsuits; could they have missed the point of having their music on Napster more? That's great internet exposure that they had a hand in shutting down and making into a Pay 4 Play site.
-- Letting go of Jason Newstead. I thought that they should have explored the biggest mistake they ever made a little bit more closely. Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No - 5 years 8 months ago

Van Halen. I used to be a fan but the Van Halen brothers are going out of their way to act like fuckwits in many ways. I could rant on but will get to the point.
David Lee Roth was fired by the brothers. They claimed at the time Roth 'quit' after deciding to go into films. Roth has continually denied this and says he was fired. He had been sent a script but wasn't leaving, but he did consider it. The Van Halen brothers were chronic alcoholics who had to be prodded continually to work and after Roth left, their music certainly took a downward spiral.
I am more inclined to accept Roth's version of events because the band has gone through other singers and come back to Roth. Roth himself has been continually working odd-jobs and admitted to spending all of his money on trying to sue the band for unpaid royalties, so he likely took up their vacant post again due to finance issues.
But after the release of 1984 the band decided to sit on their laurels and release increasingly-crappier music of such formulaic proportions. Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No - 5 years 7 months ago

I hate to say it, but Primus.
Their earlier work (Suck On This, Frizzle Fry, Miscellaneous Debris, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, and Pork Soda) was fast-paced and demonstrated the skill Les Claypool has when playing a bass, and was more metal. Their later stuff (Tales from the Punch Bowl, Brown Album, Rhinoplasty, etc.) seems to focus more on silly lyrics and a quirky sound (save Anti-Pop, which isn't that bad). Primus is better on speed, not weed. Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No - 5 years 7 months ago

I hate to say it, but Henry Rollins (not a band per se). I love Hank The Tank very much but in his quest to not conform to anyone's ideals, he has been denying himself success. He could have been so much more but he chose to stay on the outside.
It's not a bad thing to not be mainstream but his increasing devotion to spoken word, writing and tv shows (of all things) has taken his time away for what made him popular- his music. It's raw, lyrical and heavy and great to bang your head to, but it's hard to headbang to spoken word cd's. He complains in his diaries that good musicians never get breaks. Well, if he really wanted to pull some motivation together, he knows enough people to start a record label. But no, it's easier to be angry about it.
Henry used to be a regular visitor to our shores to the point we consider him a dual citizen but his last live music show was about 2 years ago and in a recent interview he admitted he was not looking at music for the forseeable future. There you go Henry! When people get sick of a huge ranting man who can no longer back up his 'I'm hardcore' diatribes, then perhaps he will get back to music. Are you sure you want to delete this post? Yes | No
