There's some of you out there who are like I, who love the sound of badly dubbed Cantonese, wire work and very poor acting. I refer of course to Hong Kong cinema!

I was just watching Infernal Affairs II for the umpteenth time and I was reflecting on just how good the original was compared to the shitty Scorcese version. Even friends of mine who dislike HK cinema remarked in the middle of The Departed, "Is it just me or is the Chinese film much better?"

I was in heaven in Hong Kong's HMV where I bought no less than 15 local releases near impossible to get here. Forbidden City Cop, The Iceman Cometh, The God of Gamblers, Drunken Master limited editon, Infernal Affairs trillogy... occasionally our state-run cinema plays some classics like Erotic Ghost Sory or Mr Vampire but for the most part we miss out on their releases here.

    Who else loves HK cinema???

I love the Beat Takeshi version of Zatoichi and it's Japanese, so perhaps we will expand the topic to 'Asian Cinema' rather than HK, who make the most movies per year bar Bollywood.

Ugh, Bollywood. Here where i live there is a massive east indian population and our theaters all play Bollywood movies now, it's terrible. The sound of the music from these movies is like a dentist's drill.

I work with an Indian Brahman woman who refuses to watch Bollywood films She said they all have the same dull storyline: boy falls in love with girl, boy from wrong side of tracks, girl's family disapprove, he does something heroic and they marry. As they have such strict cultural standards it makes other storylines close to impossible.

I read the HK film Sex And Zen is being remade in 3D by Golden Harvest, which was one of their biggest hits. We all need to see sex with a flute in 3D!

              Anita Mui (Heroic Trio)
Andy Lau (Saviour of the Soul)

Mmmmm, Andy Lau.... I think I'll find a piccie of him for my profile.
Infernal Affairs trilogy is one of the best three films I have seen. And co-incidentally Andy Lau's in it.
In the Marco Polo Hong Kong hotel they have Star cable piping HK films to your room free of charge 24 hours a day. I was tempted to sit in there watching tv all day.

One HK film I pull out to watch every so often for a good laugh is Forbidden City Cop starring Stephen Chow. Hilarious stuff.

                  Some of my favourites are:

The Armour of god (my first Jackie Chan movie)
                  Police Assassins 2
Tai Chi Master (must have been my first Jet Li movie)
                  Bodyguard from Beijing
Hard Boiled (my first Chow-Yun Fat flick)
                  Project A
Island on fire - (with Andy Lau; couldn't believe that Jackie Chan died in this movie!)

Armour of God was filmed not far from my family's farm in then-Yugoslavia so I watch the film saying "I've been there!" It was my first kung fu film and I became a fan afterwards.

Bodyguard from Beijing (I think) was retitled as From Beijing With Love, is that the secret agent Bond spoof?

Project A is pretty funny, originally released as Pirate Patrol. That clock tower sequence went pretty wrong when Chan did it the first time because he says he overplanned it, then rushed the execution.

I can recommend Chow Yun Fat's 'The Killer' as a good film to see. Lots of gund, doves and piano music as per Woo's style.

I would say it was more of The Bodyguard (the one with Kevin Costner & Whitney Houston) spoof, but not really.

The storyline was similar in that
                      - Jet Li's character is some top chinese secret-service kind of guy.
                      - He defends a woman (but in this case she's a witness to something and not a popstar)
                      - She also has a kid (her young brother or something)
                      - Saves her life more than once and then she ends up falling in love with him
                      - Jet Li in the final climatic scene takes a bullet, in fact TWO! (or was it three? can't remember clearly) for her
                      - Oh, and a clumsy sidekick

It had a really funny scene where, after Jet Li's saves this chick's life she starts coming on to him and tries to play 'dumb' as in she tries to kiss him but moves away saying 'he has to set the system or something' just before making lip contact and does this an number of times. And finally when the 'mood is right' he closes the blinds....... turns off the lights..............says goodnight............ and walks out of the room. LOL! You really have have to see that scene!
