Someone who likes Children of Bodom shouldn't be making judgements about other people's vocal talents.

Also, way to propogate the stereotype that all Australians are racist douchebags. You've really made me feel a deep connection to the Land Down Under.

Racist? When I say "Long live the whites" I'm talking about white musicians you dick.

the funny thing is Australia has a growing hip-hop and rap scene. TZU and The Herd are pretty damn popular.

yeh, I agree comments like 'long live white musicians' are pretty stupid and demeaning particularly in a thread about a predominantly-black field. He obviously lives in a wasp community, because I live in Melbourne and that kind of talk around here will get your head kicked in. Racial intolerance is the quickest way to end up friendless.

I know right; this might be a retro site, but we practice modern day tollerance.

the truth is racism is out there but I don't subscribe to it. I do think rap music does give white people a negative opinion of black people. We KNOW they don't run around with ho's, shooting guns and living the life of a gangster. But why is it a lot of rappers aspire to this lifestyle if their sanctioned music videos are to judge by? Do they think it sells records? Just a stereotype I think.

How old are you people here? I thought this was a site for people who like retro stuff like the 70s 80s and 90s. Some of you sound pretty immature. I grew up in the 80s and listened to intelligent hip hop music that was creative, poetic, and usually about social issues. Its funny to see that there are still the 'didnt make it as a real guitar player/ band member' types who continue to drag out the argument of whether hip hop (not rap, yes there is a difference) is real music or not. Its poetry over music. Thats what it is. Unless you listen to the bastardized crap they label 'hip hop' today like "lil wayne, lil webbie," and all 200 of the other "lil's" out there. Thats not hip hop. Do your homework on an entire genre of music before you pass judgement.

^ First, glad you aren't talking about me. Second, most of our ages are in our profiles if you are actually interested. Third, I choose to respect rap and hip-hop more than like a lot of it. I honestly love a lot of hip hop that came out before 96' or so.
                  Oh yeah?

Yep those were the good old days of rap. This new crap for the most part sucks.

There's still good rap out there. You just have to know where to find it.

And there was bullshit rap back in the 80s and 90s. You just don't tend to remember it. (Think hard: Vanilla Ice...Gerardo... any of that ring a bell?)

I love how everybody here is all ZOMG TODAY SUUUCKS, RETRO WUZ ALL RAINBOWZ SHOOTING OUT OF OUR ASSES

Seriously, could we all try harder not to be old farts?

Whoa, time out! You mean to tell me that you never saw the rainbows?!?
Recipe for nostalgia: Mix 80's and 90's culture. Stir in some good memories. Add a dash of reflection. Mixture should now taste bittersweet. Shake well and enjoy!

It's a pathetic shadow of it's 80's heyday. Interest in rap is waining but the record companies still shove it down people's throats. I hardly see any wigger types around anymore. Then they wonder why album sales are so low.

My two big problems are how much it relies on samples rather than original music, and often the samples aren't even well used. Take Short Distance by Obie Trice. It has a five second loop from Yes' Heart of the Sunrise going over and over again, with an out of time beat and rap over top. The original piece by Yes has a really long bass led instrumental break that would have leant itself well to rhyming over. My other problem is most of the time I can't relate to it, it often describes lower class or higher class things that I've ever known in my own life. And there's a lot of product placements in rap lyrics, it's like advertisments from FHM magazine set to a beat or something.

I guess wigger types are retro now.

There's some good rap that plays on college and university radio stations, but as far as mainstream rap/hip hop, it sucks.
