Look under the artwork, in the small space between the picture and the text. Usually, there's a small symbol there (called a "set symbol" 
. Each set has a different symbol (Invasion, Prophecy, Weatherlight, etc.). In newer sets, the symbol will be either black (common), silver (uncommon), or gold (rare). If the card is shiny (known as a foil), it's rarer than a rare, even if it's a foil common or foil uncommon. With older series', the only way to tell is by looking it up online, or using an Inquest magazine.
