Please note the term "Rockbands"...We're not including any pop or emo shit in this.
    Anyway: My top 5.
Grateful Dead/Phish: People always tell me to listen to them, but thing is...they kinda suck...
The Clash: Hugely Popular, even today...can't deny their influence, but even punk bands shouldn't have singers this terrible.
Sex Pistols: 1 selling album? Recorded before the only interesting aspect about the band (Sid Vicious) was even a member?
The White Stripes: Almost get a pass for being in a stagnant mainstream, but I can't do it. They don't deserve it.
Boston: two albums worth mentionting, endlessly formulaic. At least ACDC has a formula that hits more than it misses.
    Oh yeah?

The Sex Pistols actually did have Sid in the band when they made Never Mind the Bollocks but he was too incompetant to play on it so they brought back Glen to be a session guy and Steve Jones also plays some of the bass. According to the Never Mind the Bollocks classic albums dvd, Bodies is the only track Sid is on and they put him low in the mix.

I agree about the Greatful Dead and Phish. I think Jefferson Airplane were better, they usually knew when to end a song or a jam, had a very underrated guitar player in Jorma Kaukoen, and thanks to Grace Slick and Marty Balin far more powerful vocals. On their Long John Silver album from '72 they do a really good hard rock song, Eat Starch Mom that almost reaches Stooges and MC5 level intensity and another track, Easter? bashes the Catholic church. You won't find anything like that on a Greatful Dead album.

I also prefer the Allman Bros over the Dead and Government Mule over Phish. Phish are an overhyped cover band and their original material is nothing to be proud of.

I've tried to get into the Clash but it just never makes it for me. I like some of their singles but all their albums seem bloated and overwrought to me and I think they were out of their depth when they tried reggae stuff.

      I would say:

Oasis, I don't get why the UK worship this band so much,

Coldplay, they're like Take That blended with Radiohead, I could see how that would sell alot of albums but that doesn't make it good, if I want to hear Radiohead I'll just listen to the real deal,

Nickleback, they make me ashamed to be Canadian. They represent everything wrong with mainstream rock to me,

      and

U2, they've been milking the same guitar tricks and song structures forever. AC/DC are formulaic too but they make up for that with Angus and Malcom being such excellent guitar players.

Haha, great idea for a thread.

I absolutely agree with all of these actually. Especially the Clash and the two hippie bands.

No offense Funky Guy, but I've always thought the Who was overrated. Their songs just aren't pleasing to me.

I also think that Fugazi is overrated. I just don't think they wrote (write?) good songs. Its like they took this crap music but played it as intensely as they could and made it seem so serious. But under all that, it was just crap songs that any old dingbat could write.

Also, another band that gets waaaaayyy too much credit is Pink Floyd. They were just the first to think that 20 minutes of really spacey sound effects would be really cool, and a whole bunch of people bought into it.

Whatever, Pixies. More Who for me. They defenitley divide people. They've always been a big deal for me cause I think the songwriting is excellent and then there's their live shows, especially the footage of their early 70's shows, that astounds me every time. Even now with half the original band dead a Who live show is a good night out.

G.G. Allin. I'm glad he died of a drug overdose, rather than keeping his promise to kill himself, and a bunch of his fans, onstage.

FUN FACT: G.G. Allin's birth name was (in spite of his being a degenerate rapist who bathed himself in feces) Jesus Christ Allin.

If you really want to laugh, get ahold of GG Allin's earliest recordings. Punk rock my foot, it's proto-hair metal with slighly filfthier lyrics.

                  AC/DC
                  The Beatles
                  Metallica
                  Pantera
                  Def Leppard
                  Coldplay
                  Radiohead

The only bands out of those that I'd say has made ANY decent music is Metallica and The Beatles, and even any of their stuff isn't really beyond the spectrum...

Agree with everything there except Oasis being gay.

Guns N' Roses: Chinese Democracy was way over hyped. Too bad I didn't believe any of Axl's hype anymore than he did.

Disturbed. I can't stand them. I don't even get the appeal of them?

Limp Bizkit: Where the fuck are they now? We haven't heard anything new from them since Wes Borland left the group.

                          That's about it.

Pantera was awesome and that was so sad about Dimebag. What a min you're into grindcore but don't like thrash metal? Sounds like a poser to me.

Yeah, Tool. They are super boring. They sound like "emo-metal" Also U2. I like some of their old stuff, but c'mon guys, enough is enough. The best thing about U2 is when they were on the Simpsons. I also agree about Limp Bizkit, and any of those other rap/rock bands, what a load of crap. I'm so glad that style of music is heading out the door.

Where I used to work, My boss would constantly play his tool and dream theatre cd's. I happen to hate both bands, and always listening to them made me hate them more.
