Funny story: I remember way, waaaaaay back in the third grade when we had to do a class project with building a city out of cardboard, paper etc. But first, everyone came up with ideas for different names and the one that got the most votes would be the name of the city. Since I'd been a Simpsons fan since 1989 (when they first premiered) I came up with Springfield and it got the most votes from the class!

I remember this episode, where the Simpsons go to another state and get banned from there, and at the end of the episode you see Lisa with a map of the US saying that they're now banned from 48 states or so, with just as much crosses on the map, so it can't be one of those

You can bet that the northern Kentucky reference is another attempt by the writers to fuel the "where is Springfield" debate.
Except that its backed up by other "in-character" episodes as well.

Remember the episode where Marge gets sugar outlawed, and Homer teams up with Mr. Burns to smuggle it in? Mr. Burns says they're going to have to go south of the boarder to get sugar, to which Homer immediantly asks "Tennessee?"

The Simpsons Springfield is set in Kentucky.

But then how do you explain the ocean that borders the town? Kentucky is land locked.

I mostly agree with the Oregon theory. It makes the most sense (considering it's completely made up in the first place.) Unfortunately, a lot of the writers now live in SoCal, so they forget to make the Simpson World more "Oregon-ish" (ie- countless episodes that should include colder weather.)

A few years ago, my mother made an interesting suggestion about where they live: she thinks they live in Springfield, MA because of the mountains, ocean, Capital City (Boston), etc. etc. But she also mentioned that the mayor was a Kennedy. We've been to Springfield countless times, and other than those things, it's nothing like where the Simpsons live. Plus, Springfield is a big city.

If only they went the way of King of the Hill (TX) and Family Guy (RI) and established them in a state with a fake town name. But maybe they learned from the example?

              Not really.

Having lived in the Northern KY/Greater Cincinnati area all my life, I can honestly say that we have an Ohio River. Not to mention the Mississippi River to the west.

So, no, we're NOT land locked.:x

The same way I explain them having a giant gulch and one of the world's highest mountains in town.

                Magic.

But, just as a side note, there really is a Springfield, Kentucky, and it is within close proximity to a Shelbyville, Kentucky, and it does have a nuclear power plant.

Well, by "landlocked" I meant it doesn't border an ocean, sea or large lake.
