Did anyone ask?
The first television (and VCR) I had in my room was when I was 18. I got it from my sister's boyfriend's (at the time) family because it was a spare in their basement and they didn't need it really. They included a VCR too because the TV was old enough that I couldn't hook anything up to it without one (it had a glorious wood grain finish on the outside paneling. As the Angry Video Game Nerd put it "[The 80's] was definitely "the wood age".). My only gripe is that the TV came from a smoking home (my sister's former boyfriend's mom used to smoke in the house) and my room smelled terrible for at least a month. It was free though.
I don't remember exactly what company made it but it was fantastic to have my own TV to play my Playstation on in my room. Especially because for a while I was constantly fighting my family for TV time on one of the two sets we had in the house. My only alternative was a 5" black and white, portable Sony UHF TV I had "frankenstein-ed" with a set of rabbit ears and a Playstation RF adapter.
It was oh so ghetto fabulous when it was hooked up and it was horrid for my eyes. I have memories of many late night sessions of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 and Metal Gear Solid on that thing. Christ, I even beat MGS for the first and only time on this TV. I never had the patience or the will to play that game all the way through and finish it ever again. I'm just glad I got a color TV before I got addicted to Final Fantasy VII and ultimately my PS2, which incidentally I no longer own because I traded it in for Christmas shopping money...I kinda miss it sometimes but I also have a Sega Genesis which I love to pieces.
Anyway, since this first TV which I got in in 2003, I've had three more sets of my own including the one I'm currently using.
-20" flat screen CRT TV (I don't remember the make of this one because its been about three years since I had it)--Got it from a college buddy of mine in Toledo because his family had enough TVs in their house and he didn't feel like taking it home.
-13" Insignia tube TV--I also got this one from the same friend when I decided I liked this smaller TV so much for gaming and personal viewing that when we were roommates I swapped the other TV he gave me for this one. I don't regret it, but the TV was only good for another six months when the speakers finally gave out...
-13" Insignia tube TV--...Luckily when this happened, Best Buy was still carrying tube TVs and I was able to purchase the exact same model as I had before.
I bought this TV almost three years ago before the big HDTV boon. Now try waltzing into Best Buy. All they have are HDTVs and they're fucking expensive. I think the smallest one they have is a 19" screen and its probably about $250!! Forget it. Not with the lousy pay checks I get right now and the state of the economy. As long as this TV works (knock on wood) for at least 2 or three more years, I don't have a problem with it. It doesn't have cable and I only use it for playing Sega games and watching DVDs. I don't need a big expensive fancy TV nor does my family. The biggest TV my family has is a 25" Sharp tube TV and they don't care either. We probably all together only watch about eight to ten hours of TV a day so its not a big deal. As long as we have digital cable, we have nothing to worry about.
