dinomyte 4 years 8 months ago Posts: 26	I grew up watching cartoons. A lot of cartoons. So when I say I like watching anime, don't think I only enjoy it because I'm following a trend. (I'm guessing that's what a weeaboo is.. no clue what that means). Don't know if this will be relevant to some people, but I'm asian and grew up there for a little while as well. Considering, how much anime Japan puts out in a year, it's not surprising that a lot of it is crap. But that's life. 90% of the stuff that gets published, filmed, drawn, etc. tends to be crap. Just look at Hollywood. Here are some animes I'd recommend for people who hate the generic stuff. Of course these are just some of my favourites. I don't expect everyone to agree with me. Go to sites like Animenfo if you want a synopsis on it: 1. Miyazaki films: Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart and Grave of the Fireflies in particular 2. Monster. Great show, a bit long, a bit drawn out. Story is very much like a novel though. Apparently Hollywood bought the rights for it as well. 3. The Girl Who Left Through Time. A light movie, based on a book. 4. Nodame Cantibile: It's goofy, it's weird, it's about a guy and girl studying to be great classical musicians. It's also nice to see something that encourages younger people to appreciate that type of music. 5. Cowboy Bebop. Love the characters. If there's an anime that should remind you of Firefly, this is it. 6. Now and Then, Here and There. Powerful Story. Anti-war movie, main focus on child soldiers. 7. PlanetES: Great Sci-fi show. About space-debris collectors aka garbage men. Deeper than that, but that's the simple gist of it. 8. Haibane Renmei: Very haunting show. 13 eps, a bit slow paced. Feels like a novel. Not for anyone that has ADD or it's hyperactive cousin. Yes, this is a long post. But I'm hoping that it helps some people give anime a chance. Or at least think that it's not all full of garbage.

I don't discriminate. lol If I see something animated, and like it I'm going to watch it. Up until a point, I didn't even know what "anime" was. Ironically, I was watching "anime" long before I knew what it was...although, by Japan's definition, it's nothing but a cartoon.

Similar experience =) I didn't start watching "anime" until I was Grade 8. When I was introduced to it again, I was like "Hey I watched some of this stuff back when I was a little kid. Btw, why is it called anime?"

Btw, why is it called anime?" Anime is short for the word "animation". Japan have a lot of borrowed words that they've shortened. If my stomach wasn't growling I could probably think of some more aside from a nime and conbini (convenience store).

It's the fact that the show's story isn't really exciting anyone or moving forward in most points.

darthmunk 4 years 2 months ago Posts: 6707	I used to be the ultimate anime hater in the world. Then I saw Afro Samurai. I then realized that it's not that bad at all. And I think the main part of it that scares people away is just the art style. A lot of animes have great plots compared to a lot of American cartoons. I'm sure if the story and script of a great anime was used with American animation, a lot of anime haters would like it.

See how stupid and baseless that is, as it's not true of "all" people? That's called "generalizing", which is what you're doing. Not all "anime" is pervy. It depends on what you watch, the genre, the age group it's being aimed at, etc. It's like watching a movie like Home Alone and then a movie like Sixteen Candles. Both are well-known John Hughes movies. Sixteen Candles had nudity, bad language, etc. in it. Home Alone didn't, as it had a lower rating, meaning more "kid friendly". So...does that mean that all John Hughes movies will be the same? If someone watches a show like Pokemon (aimed at young children), I doubt it's going to be like the 'pervy' stuff you're thinking of.

You should even check out the X-rated anime classic "Legend of the Overfiend" which is a horrifying animated movie loaded with rape, tentacles from demons screwing chicks, gore, exploding heads, mutilation, bisexuality, and every excess around that gave anime a negative name known as Japornomation.
