    Hello,

Regarding this Portuguese Megadrive commercial, I am interested in a specific part of it, where it shows a clip of Sonic fighting Eggman at the end of GHZ3. The interesting thing is, instead of the normal checkered ball that you would see (even in pre-release screenshots), there is this rotating red ball with a diamond rotating around it. We in the Sonic hacking/research scene are currently debating whether or not the red ball was actually present in the game, or edited in afterwards. Unfortunately, the video quality is not good enough to tell, as it seems to be converted from PAL to NTSC and also deinterlaced to get a 320x240 30fps video. My request is the following - does anyone happen to have the video such that it can be captured in a full 576 line 25fps PAL resolution? I understand that VHS is low quality to begin with, but I'm more interested in a capture that isn't deinterlaced. It's my understanding that this commercial was translated from a French commercial:

Note that this is originally a French commercial (even the "Sega c'est plus fort que toi" has been translated litterally at the end). And I bet it would be exactly the same (but noone ever knows). Unfortunately, that French version can't be found anywhere.

So that would work fine as well. I'm mainly after the full-resolution interlaced video, which I can then turn back into proper progressive game video.

If anyone can help me with this, I'll greatly appreciate it.

      Hi!

In the first place I submitted the megadrive portuguese commercial, and that ball from the GHZ3 is from the pal version.

If you wanna have the video (the video isn´t tag with "retrojunk.com";), here it is in via Rapidshare:

Would you happen to know where to get that video recaptured from an "original" tape? It's better than what we had, for sure, since it's 352x288 at 25fps, none of that standards conversion stuff from the WMV version. But still, being 288 lines, it's missing half of the original game's frames, and so that's why I was hoping to track down someone with the actual tape.

Also, the weird thing about that ball is, very few people have even seen it, as it's not in the actual game from any of our experiences. If anyone does somehow have a cart with it, please contact me to have your cart backed up. But this is literally the only proof we have of this ball's very existance, and we can't tell if it was actually in the game at that point, or what.

I am not understanding what do you want!

Can you explain in a more simple way!

          Sorry!

Ok, I'll try to be as simple as I can.

Full resolution of a PAL video is generally held to be 720x576x25fps, but it's an interlaced image, which means that there are two distinct images within one frame. With the Megadrive, you instead had an output of roughly 288 lines at 50fps, which is directly convertable to 720x576x25fps. However, this video is 352x288x25fps which means that either every other "half-frame" was dropped, or the video was just plain resized from 576 to 288 lines. If the video was captured directly at 352x288 then it's the former, since that's how most cards capture that resolution.

I need the 720x576 capture so that we can see what's on every frame of the Megadrive video - as it stands now, we only have every other frame.

Sorry if that's not simple enough, but issues like this with video aren't really simple to begin with, so it's hard to simplify. Basically, I need a 720x576 capture from the original tape.

Ok! I got the idea!

But I will take some time, because I have lots of personal things to care of, but I will try to be the fastest I can.

When I finished, I will post to you in this topic, via Rapidshare

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.

And if the file ends up being too big to use RapidShare, no problems, as I have a Linux box set up that I can give you a temporary account on to upload the files. One question - can you use a really high bitrate so that I get as much quality as possible out of the tape?

I will try but no promises!

The file has less 50 megabytes,I don´t think I will need a temporary account but thanks anyway! :)
