I finished off my Jimi Hendrix vinyl collection today with a copy of War Heroes. I wanted to have the first three posthumous Hendrix albums from the early 70's. I think together, Cry of Love, Rainbow Bridge and War Heroes do a better job rounding up Jimi's final work than First Rays of the New Rising Sun and South Saturn Delta.

My mom, my aunt and I found a gold mine today at a little used vinyl shop in Cleveland called Hodad's Music and Collectibles. The selection was unreal and if the owner didn't have something on the racks he would gladly go in the back and find it if he knew he had it. I managed to knock a huge chunk out of my vinyl wish list today and I think I've rounded my collection out pretty well. Here's what we found:

          Me:

          LP's

          -Pink Floyd--Animals
          -The Beatles--1962–1966 (The Red Album)
          -The Beatles--1967–1970 (The Blue Album)
          -Journey--Escape
          -Journey--Frontiers
          -Donald Fagen--The Nightfly
          -Gene Simmons--Kiss Solo Album #2
-The Police--Every Breath You Take: The Singles
          -The Sugarcubes--Life Is Good

          45's

          -Tone Loc--Funky Cold Medina

          Mom:

          LP's

          -Donny Osmond--A Time For Us
          -Aerosmith--Toys In The Attic

          45's

-Otis Redding--(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay
          -Rod Stewart--Maggie May
          -The Archies--Sugar Sugar

          My aunt:

          LP's

          -Madonna--True Blue
          -Men At Work--Business As Usual

And here's my most wanted list as of today:
          -Pink Floyd--Wish You Were Here
          -Kiss--Love Gun
          -Kiss--Creatures Of The Night
          -Paul Stanley--Kiss Solo Album #1
          -Peter Criss--Kiss Solo Album #3
          -Ace Frehley--Kiss Solo Album #4
          -Bjork--Homogenic
          -Bjork--Post
          -Michael Jackson--Bad
-John Williams--The Empire Strikes Back Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
          -Journey--Only The Young (45)
          -Genesis--Invisible Touch

          Wish me luck!!

            Santa Dog single-The Residents (1972)

Also, I have a 1945 Morton Gould record in case anyone likes orchestra music.

I hope you do well finding a decent priced copy of Freak Out, it can be expensive at used record stores. When I lived in Ottawa there was a store that had a few copies but they always wanted $100. Eventually in Peterborough I found a great condition mono pressing for $50. It was missing the freak out spots map which is what makes some copies so valuable but I was more interested in the music than the extras anyway. The mono version has very different mixes of some tracks, like You Didn't Try to Call Me has a full ending instead of fading out.

I know I am way out of the loop on this thread but I found it doing a site search for Stevie Nicks. She is my favorite artist EVER - I've loved her since I was 11. I have several vinyl LPs of hers, as well as Fleetwood Mac. I would love to get the Buckingham Nicks album and know of a local record store that sells it, but I haven't had the cash for it yet.

I don't know what it is about collecting vinyl...I just have a thing for all things nostalgia. Is it any wonder I write articles for this site which is called Retro Junk?

                      REVIVAL!

Finally found the time to get some more records. Here are the spoils of last spending binge:

The B52s - Cosmic Thing Some dude recommended the song Channel Z a while ago, and me being a fan of Roam and Love Shack convinced me enough to buy the record. It's really good

Gorillaz - Gorillaz Oh yeah. I wanted this one for so long. Soooo good.

And finally Gorillaz - Plastic Beach Great album, and the extra cover art is beautiful.

I have a modest collection I'm proud of. I can add a more complete list, but I have every Genesis album from Trespass to Invisible Touch including some on the original Charisma label and all four ABACAB covers. Every Zeppelin, all the 70's YES, 70's Queen and a growing Paul McCartney collection.

I also have the first two Mars Volta albums, Tremulant EP, and two singles all unopened. I'm getting into more obscure Prog Rock, such as Camel, Aphrodite's Child, Tangerine Dream, Gentle Giant, etc.

Do you have any Genesis titles with Charisma's original pink scroll label? They're pretty valuable.

I have all the Gabriel era Genesis albums on vinyl. The only ones I have from Charisma are Trespass and Genesis Live. Trespass is a later reissue with the mad hatter label. I have the Buddah records 2 lp set with Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot together. I found it in good condition at a St. Vincent DePaul for $1.

                            Latest cool cheap finds:

K-Tel Hit Express - side two is pretty beat up but side one plays fine and it's the better side anyway. It's like a time capsule of what FM rock stations sounded like in the early 80's. It's got Men at Work's Who Can it Be Now, Rick James' Superfreak, Loverboy's Working for the Weekend, 867-5309 Jenny by Tommy Tutone, Six Months in a Leaky Boat by Split Enz and a Rick Springfield track, unfortunatley not Jesse's Girl but for 25 cents I can't complain. The only good tracks on side two are Journey - Don't Stop Believin' and the Police's Spirits in the Material World. The last track on side two is riddled with skips and has a big scratch in it. I'm guessing the original owner either really loved or really hated the track. What I could hear of it was hilarious, it's I've Never Been to Me by Charlene and seems to be some kind of lesbian anthem near as I can tell between all the skips. I'll have to try and find the song on youtube for a larf.

The History of Country vol 3 - has good tracks by George Jones and Patsy Cline

Rare Earth - In Concert (cover has original die cut backback design.)

Cheap Trick - Live at Budokan (includes the booklet.)

Latest finds - 40 Country Goldies (3 lp set I got for two dollars, a few tracks on it are also considered early rock and roll classics.)

Captain Beeheart and the Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica (original Straight Records pressing in good condition.)

and Jimi Hendrix - Loose Ends (UK pressing. This 1974 compilation includes many of the tracks which were not released on cd until the 90's and 00's by Jimi's relatives in their original form. Warner Reprise rejected this release and brought in Alan Douglas to put overdubs on some of the material that appeared on Loose Ends along with other Hendrix outtakes for the North American release Crash Landing which still causes major upset and debate among Hendrix fans.)

Go have a look at the cover of your dad's copy of Sgt. Pepper's. If there isn't a yellow header that says Stereo at the top it's a mono copy and if it's in good condition it's valuable. Especially if it has the cardboard cutout sheet insert and the album bag with red and pink wavy lines.

My dad just passed me his very small Beatles collection which included the White Album and Sgt. Pepper, both with all the inserts. I was crushed when I realized they were on the Captiol label and not Parlophone, but I'm still extremely lucky to have them.
