Growing up, my parents had a pretty decent record collection. Both LP's and 45's. Most of the music was Lionel Richie, The Carpenters, Whitney Houston, Men At Work, Toto, etc. Lots of 70's and 80's music. My parents still have all their records to this day.
Are CD's better than records? That's an interesting question. I guess it depends on your generation and how nostalgic you are. For sharpness and clarity, CD's are the way to go. No hissing and popping, no annoying skipping (most of the time) and you don't have to worry about getting a new needle for the record player when it gets worn out (believe me, I had to do it!).
However, personally, I like both. I don't mind the hissing and popping that comes with records. In fact, I welcome it. It gives you that back-in-the-day feeling. The smell of the vinyl and even the very act of putting the needle to the record is great fun for turning back the time; especially for those like me who grew up with this stuff.
I do collect CD's and lots of them. I've tried to get many of my favorite songs that I grew up with on record, on a CD just so I can hear the clarity. I'm putting together quite a collection of 80's music right now.
