I became a Star Wars fan when it had its second major boon in the mid-90's. My figure collection started with the Power Of The Force 2 collection started in 1995 and I collected them consistently all the way up through The Saga Legends collection in 2006. I also have quite a few older figures from the original A New Hope line [1978] all the way up through the original Power Of The Force collection (1985). I have about 100+ figures in all. My collecting days have mostly ended because I have most of the characters I want but once in a while if I see a new version of one of my favorite characters (i.e. Boba Fett, Darth Vader, R2-D2, Yoda, Darth Maul, etc.) I'll pick one up for old times sake. I've since moved on to collecting G.I. Joes and Transformers but I'll always remember when I started my Star Wars figure collection in Summer of 1997...
I was 11 years old in the summer of 1997 and my mom had promised to give me $10 if I came to work with her one Saturday to help her at the medical billing place where she worked. Sure enough I agreed to go and I got my $10. Later, in the afternoon after my mom was done working, I asked if we could go to Toys 'R' Us and look at Star Wars figures. I wanted to start my collection with Luke and Darth Vader but finding Vader would prove to be no easy task. The first figure I bought was Luke Skywalker in Hoth Gear. I was disappointed that I couldn't find Vader, so decided to save my remaining $5 and go somewhere else. Later on, after my family and I went to Chi Chi's for dinner, we decided to go to the mall and browse for a while. Sure enough with my remaining $5 I made a bee line towards KB Toys. They didn't have Vader either but I saw that they had R5-D4, which is the droid that Luke and his uncle almost bought from the Jawas in A New Hope. I decided to buy him because he was cool (he had a friggin missile launcher) and just wait for the Vader figure for another time...
My top five Star Wars action figures:
5. R2-D2 (Episode II collection, 2002)

I got this one when Episode II came out and I loved it because it was the first R2-D2 figure I had that made noise and had a flashing light on his head. Very cool.
4. Yoda (Power Of The Force 2 collection, 1995)

I got this one for my 12th birthday from my aunt and uncle. I'll never know where they found this one but I was really excited to get Yoda. They also found Chewbacca, Grand Moff Tarkin, and Garindian for me.
3. Darth Maul (Episode I collection, 1999)

This was the holy grail of the Episode I era and my mom found him for me at our local Marc's store one day for $5.99 ($2 cheaper than what they usually cost at like Walmart or Toys 'R' Us for $7.99)
2. Boba Fett (Ralph McQuarrie Concept)(Saga Legends collection, 2006)

I originally saw this one at a collectible toy stand at a flea market one day but the guy running the stand said he hadn't priced it yet but if I wanted to give him my phone number and have him hold it for me he would be willing to do that. Of course this flea market was more than a little out of my way and I was impatient so I looked it up on eBay when I got home and I bought this unique Boba Fett (my favorite character) to add to my collection.
1. Darth Vader (Power Of The Force 2 collection, 1995)

This was the one. I already told the story about this figure on another post but I'll try to tell the condensed version for this purpose. Since I became a Star Wars fan in the summer, I had been looking for this figure everywhere but with no luck. I even asked for the figure for Christmas, but no one in my family could find him for me. I got about a dozen new figures and an X-Wing, but no Vader. Then by some divine miracle, two days after Christmas, my aunt had gone to our local K-Mart and was browsing for after Christmas sales when she came across my coveted Darth Vader. She quickly bought it for me and it was a neat surprise when she told me to close my eyes and hold out my hands. I was nothing short of amazed when I opened my eyes!! |
