Has anybody came across avi videos files not playing due to an unrecognized codec or file type for windows xp? I'm sure I have the recent codecs and the divx codec, and still nothing. Anyone has any tips or solutions?

    Thanks

First you need to open the file with gspot to see what codec is needed http://www.free-codecs.com/download/GSpot.htm

if you dowload Real Alternative http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm
                                    QuickTime Alternative http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm
                                    and FFDshow http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm
It will cover 99% of all of the video files out there. If you don't have the required codec and you did install FFDshow then find a site that has the specific codec and install. Stay away from codec packs like Nemo or any of the packs. They will usualy add duplicate codecs and can cause alot of problems.

You may also have conflicting codes. use gspot to tell you what codec your computer is trying to use. Then use DirectShow Filter Manager http://www.softella.com/dsfm/index.en.htm
and remove the codec that your computer was trying to use. having too many codecs is just as bad or maby worse than not having the right ones.

sometimes your windows media player codes get corrupted and need to be reloaded http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Installation_Package_for_Windows_Media_Player_7_8_9_10.htm

These should be all of the tools you need to fix your video problems
And now for something completely different................

I think these files were improperly coded or it uses a very rare codec. I tried everything and still nothing. Only a few files work but the majority doesnt work.

Anyway, thanks guys for helping me out with this.

with gspot you can tell if it is incomplete, if that is the case sometimes the video will not play or it can lock up your computer
