First and foremost,I'm sticking to 3D games because if we'd include 2D ones we'd probably never end (the horrid Dragonball Z fighting games made for SNES would probably take a whole page). Mind you,the following are not mediocre fighting games. These are affronts against Creation itself...

    Fight for Life (1996)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ01kNJw0LE

This game is relatively obscure -due largely to the fact that the Jaguar sucked and few people bought it- ,but I -sadly-had a chance to play it and it is perhaps the worst excuse for a fighting game EVER. Hoow-lee crap! Besides the ridiculous story (a bunch of guys trapped in Hell fighting for a chance to resurrection),this game plays more like a mannequin underwater ballet simulator.

    War Gods (1995)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgpVVnilz1A

The epic suckiness of this game, one the other hand, was more well known. With characters straight out of an early 80s Saturday morning cartoon show and a completely broken fighting system, this game deserves to rot in the lowermost Pits of Oblivion where it is right now.

    Killing Zone (1995)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17SmWcnSajQ

Finding anything on this patethic excuse for game has been near impossible. It is truly forgotten,I guess. I stumbled upon this...thing in a discount bin about 10 years or so ago and I wish I hadn't. It involved fighting classic monster types (a vampire,a minotaur,a Frankenstein-like monster),but the characters moved so slow that any Ray Harryhausen creature could've danced around it in the time it takes a character to land a punch.

    Dark Rift (1997)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCMzNY6gXw8

Poor N64,it never had a decent fighting game (unless you count Super Smash Brothers). Dark Rift was the first of several absolutely horrible fighting games that paraded thru the system, but it was perhaps the worst of the lot. Like War Gods,it involved a cast of characters so ludicrously bad designed that made the Killer Instinct gang look like the Royal Shakespearean Society. Add to that a combo system that was...no good..at all... and you get a product that can tear a rift in the spacetime continuum with its suckiness.

    Cardinal Syn ( 1998 )

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dnV5ODoVQ0

Don't look so smug,Sony! PSX had more than its share of truly awful fighting games and this is one that you guys published. I remember some mags actually getting overly excited over this turd. It was supposed to be like Tobal with a free roaming system and picking up your fights, but the final product was a cheap Mortal Kombat knockoff. I remember I rent it,played for 15 minutes and returned it that same afternoon...

    Bio F.R.E.A.K.S (199

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWnGRc6_7VM

This game closed the "Terror Cycle" of bad Western-made fighting games with sci-fi/post-apocalyptic/fantasy themes. Only Mortal Kombat survived the fallout.

    Kensei: Sacred Fist (1998 )

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59UPcHazfdE

Think all fighting games made in Japan are good? Boy,think again. There are at least 5 times more crappy fighting games developed in Japan than over here. There's a ton of games I could name, but I think I'll pick Kensei. Konami just didn't have any luck in their forays into the fighting genre. Their first series,Eternal Champions, was awful. But Kensei sealed their fate. This was a cheap, cheap,CHEAP Tekken/Virtua Fighter clone (notice the Kazuya-like guy in the vid) with a "running mode" that made your character look like it was chickenwalking. Ugh...

Well, that's all for this terrifying trip thru chop-socky memory lane. Several other bad fighting games came after this lot (Def Jam Icon...BARF!),but I doubt we'll ever see a period of suckiness like the one between 1995 and 1998.

        -Thrill Kill-

Choose your favorite retard and fight with other 3 retards. I think it was banned or something, however I have a copy at work. The game sucks.

Anyone remember G.A.S.P - Fighter's NexTREAM by Konami for the N64? I'm not sure what it was called in the US but that game was quite a bit worse than Kensei I think. Kensei at least had some decent graphics and that Steven Segal rip-off looked pretty cool.

In G.A.S.P you had to create your own character from scratch and randomly unlock special moves.

Virtua Fighter - It may have been a bellwether but it's still slow and crappy. To Sega's credit they invented 3D fighting, but I think Namco perfected it [Tekken].

Tobal No. 1 - The RPG fanboys can praise Squaresoft and everything they do all they want but it doesn't change the fact that Tobal No. 1 is crap.

Ehrgeiz - Just becasue a game has Final Fantasy VII stuff in it doesn't make good or a classic. Ehrgeiz isn't bad it's just highly over rated. It received a lot of praise that I don't think it deserved, it's just... meh.

GASP,like Tobal,VS.,Psychic Force,Evil Zone and a large number of long forgotten fighting games were largely mediocre. But I don't think they deserve to burn with these guys...maybe...

I never thought I'd see someone defending such a godawful travesti. Not in this Universe,atleast...

I was pretty slow and not too pretty. But the foundation for the superb Virtua Fighter series was already there.

this should have been an article. You put as much effort in this post as most article writers have.

The N64 had some of the worst 3D fighters. Anyone remember "Fighter's Destiny"?

if you guys think Fighters Destiny was bad, Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi (i think that's what the title was) was a terrible attempt to make Star Wars into a Soul Calibur-like game, and they even made the lightsabers into less than powerful versions which were inferior than the ones in the films

I think War Gods is Ok, if you want Mortal Kombat on a budget, though.
