What do you all think of the new TV show Life on Mars starring Jason O'Mara? This show was adapted from the BBC series under the same title. The title of the series is taken from a 1971 song recorded by David Bowie (which was the inspiration for the name of his then backing band, the Spiders from Mars).

The show starts in 2008, where it's set until 7 minutes into the episode. Sam Tyler, the lead-off character, is an NYPD homicide detective who nabs a murder suspect, who then gets grilled from him at the precinct house. He answers the phone in the age-old squad room, which as of late had been upgraded with computers and splashes of color on the walls.

But the retro side of this occurs after Detective Tyler finds himself a victim of a hit-and-run and then afterward realizes that it's not only his room, but the whole city, that ultimately dwells in the year 1973.

Consequently, Tyler doesn't know he's found himself 35 years back in time, and he struggles to know that such modern trappings he'd known from the present day, such as cellphones (first introduced in 1979) and all sorts of digital music media (CDs and MP3 players; the CD first having bowed out as early as 1983), as well as some recent police department tactics, did not exist in '73.

Audiences watching this U.S. adaptation of the series are introduced to all the songs that blasted on our stereo speakers from 1973 and back (Sweet's "Little Willy," Five Man Electrical Band's "Signs," The Who's "Baba O'Riley" and The Rolling Stones' "Out of Time";).

I love the show....I thought it was character oriented...they focus a lot on the impact the transition has on the main character. I thought it was fun, thoughtful, and very retro!
