Your local thrift store is awash in VHS tapes as people have moved to DVD. Many of these tapes have content that was recorded almost 20 years ago. I have bought tapes with commercials from the late 80's and early 90's for next to nothing. Its not always easy to tell when the stuff on the tapes is from by looking, but it's not too much money to try your luck, and you may be saving a piece of "Retro Junk" from the landfill.

If you already know that, just ignore me!

I never thought that you could find stuff people taped off TV in a thrift store. I just would have guessed that you'd see official tapes that people didn't want anymore. Have you gone on multiple occassions and/or gone to multiple stores and found new tapes? I am thinking that I'll definitely have to try it too.

Also, what types of shows have you found on such tapes?

I've done this before. Bought an old tape with "Cheers" on it. Turns out they were syndicated reruns broadcast the day of the series finale on a local channel. There were a few decent commercials on it.

The thing about buying old tapes from thrifts is that people had a tendency to copy rentals and the like, so you may be buying something commercial-free, so I don't do it often (plus my local thrifts are nuts, $3-$5 a tape!).

The ones around here don't usually take copied stuff. But I suppose I could look. I'm all desperate for commercials lately. I have an aunt in Florida that is an absolute pack-rat. Her kids are a few years older than I am, moved out and all that. I'm half-temped to ask her to send me any old shows they taped in the 80s, I know she's got some.

My local thrift store raised the price for old VHS tapes from $1 to $3 - so I stopped shopping there.

But the others arround town usually throw them out...afraid of breaking some laws.

Cool. Do flea markets sell VHS recordings taped off TV?
                  Just want to know.

Best Buy has about 50 or more shows from the 70's to today on DVD. You can buy whole collections, or just seasons.
And with that, I'm gone with the shadows...
