After hearing Tarantino say it was one of his favorites and reading about it online I bought it and gave this movie a try.

Not very good at all, and truth be told one of the two movies I would never watch again. The animal violence was over the top.

I'm no bitch and love violent stuff but damn they really killed animals in this movie. I wouldn't care if it were people being killed since we suck but a giant turtle come on.

    Has anyone else seen this?

People don't suck, and don't even joke about that. Might I remind you of the Twilight Zone movie?

I've only read about this, but really don't have the heart to watch it, it's sad they actually killed animals just for the sake of this movie... not to mention they had to re-shoot a scene where a monkey was killed, in-turn killing two monkeys. Whoever says this is a "movie masterpiece" is a completely heartless retard, it's basically just the most violent humans ever caught on film who kill and rape each other with blood squirting everywhere. I'm never going to watch this shit.
      Game... ovahhhhhhhhh!!!

Good stay far away from this. I regret seeing it, and I watched it about 3 years ago.

        Just horrible.

Tarantino liking it is enough reason not to watch it.

The animal violence was reprehensible, but you can watch it without seeing any animals getting hurt. The rest of the movie is very good as far as old horror movies go. It was an interesting premise, the violence was well-excecuted (pardon the pun) and the soundtrack is great.

Haha yeah for being such a low budget it wasn't terrible. But I just can't get past the animal killing.

Did you know the guy that made it made all of the actors sign a contract to go into hiding for a year so people would believe the movie was real and they died.

Gotta give it to 'em the going into hiding part is creative and cool.

Here's a link to the theme song:

This movie does raise the question about north american perceptions of the 'savages' that live outside of our modern civilization. Imagine this mellow, beautiful soundtrack playing while on-screen the documentary filmmakers from the city set fire to a peaceful village of 'savages' to create a scene to make their documentary more dramatic.

Hahaha. You either love this film or hate it. I love it! It is one of the ultimate cannibal films (the other of course being Cannibal Ferox).

I realize that the animal cruelty in the film can be unsettling for some viewers, but in today's American society we often overlook the animal cruelty right under our noses. Fact of the matter is, you should be just as outraged every time you pass a McDonald's or some other establishment that offers animal products for our pleasure.

I guess it's easier to point the finger at an exploitation film made in the 70's, than it is to examine your own exploitation of animals.

                      Yuck.
My favorite horror movies are about ghosts and skeletons.
I don't give a shit about any of these torture movies. Saw 4, Hostel 2, and Flintstones 5:Viva Rock Vegas can go suck a fuck.

Remember that old man who said he didn't believe in skeletons when you gave him that telephone survey of what he believed in and was scared of?

dude, come on--this movie is an Italian classic. The gore scenes are few and far between and it's nothing like any of the new films that have come out. You deserve to say you have seen this movie. Lets watch it together. I'll bring the 40's.

If you're going to bitch about 7 animals being slaughtered on film, let's not forget about the millions that are slaughtered off of film every year in the US.

Don't give me that half-assed animal rights bullshit.

I'm not giving any animal rights bullshit. That would be contradicting considering I eat honey-glazed ham and poached salmon. It's pretty strange comparing the slaughter of cows for human consumption to the slaughter of various animals for fun.

You want to love a movie that got away with that stupid shit? Fine. Have at it. Justifying it is just frivolous.

So far that's the only reason you've given as to why people shouldn't complain. You don't kill an animal on film just for a movie, that's fucking twisted. At least when it comes to food, it's providing humans with, you know, something to eat, not just for some sick kicks.

Oh come on, "Hostel" is just mainstream stuff! this is hardcore foregin stuff that would mess your mind.

Animal cruelty in movies was never new with this, they had it before in such Italian cannibal movies like "Man from Deep River", "Jungle Holocaust", "Mountain of the Cannibal God" and other flicks like "Men Behind The Sun'.

I was tempted, but I kept hearing about impaled vaginas and rocks smashing mutant turtles. I got scared, and decided to watch Baby Geniuses 2: Super Babies instead. Now that was a rip-roaring good time.

So what you're saying is that if an animal is brutally slaughtered, then eaten, only then does it cease to be viewed as cruelty to the animal?

I believe most, if not all, of the animals killed in the film were consumed. We can all rest easy now.
