What were the most interesting news events of the 1980s in your opinion. Just thought I'd bring some news stuff. If this is a popular thread I'll do news of 1990-1995

I remember that shameless product whore Bill Cosby spouting off at the mouth on commercials about how wonderful that crap was. How come the shape of soda cans changed so much sunce then?

I remember New Coke tasted just like Pepsi......it was basically Coke with even MORE sugar in it. I don't remember it being gross, or disgusting, or for that matter even particularly different.........

Whats funny is if you watch Back To The Future, when Marty goes into the store and asks for a Tab....and then a Pepsi Free, the guy behind the counter doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

So I wonder..how many kids today watch that movie and also "Dont get the joke". I mean, I'm like the only guy in town who buys the handfull of six-packs of TAB that my local grocery store carries, and Pepsi Free went the way of the dodo many moons ago......

you know whats weird is there are a slew of sodas that went the way of the dodo- pepsi free, pepsi clear, the NEW coke, jolt(which somehow i hear is making a comeback)...

but yes i got those jokes on back to the future.
                  "can i get a tab?"
"you gotta order somethin before i give you tab kid"
"look just get me a pepsi free...'

                  funny stuff.

Well it was no surprise Pepsi Clear went away....I mean.....lets face it....who wanted this soda? :)

The best spoof on this was a SNL skit for Heinz "GRAVY CLEAR"....it was hysterical....this clear thick mucus they were pretenting was beef gravy.
                    Oh that was funny.

New Coke lingered on for more than a few years as I recall....eventually only Coke Classic remained. But it died because, lets face it, having a cola company produce two different colas...that weren't all that different.....whats the point? More expense for the company.

Mello Yello came and went, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it tasted like...I think it was an imitation of Mountain Dew, but I can't be sure.

Pepsi Free was just caffeine-free Pepsi. And I didn't know JOLT went out of business...I thought you could buy it online if you wanted it...
all the online soda places seem to have it?

Whtas cool is that if you want to pay for it, you can still get the original Doctor Pepper formula, made with real cane sugar and bottled in glass, from that one place in Texas that still makes it that way.

now you want to talk WEIRD? Tell my why the local grocery store I go to wont consistantly stock Diet Mountain Dew or Tab, but hot-damn they will keep 1 liter bottles of MOXIE on the store shelf.

MOXIE...seriously? WTF is that stuff? isn't it from like the DEPRESSION era!?!?!? WHO BUYS THIS...!?

and that snl skit was one of the more disgusting skits!! so funny though- right up there with cookie dough gatorade!!! so gross yet so funny!

and yeah mello yello was a total mountain dew rip. kinda like mr pibb is a rip off of dr pepper.

I am pretty sure Mr. Pibb is no longer in production. When I first went to DisneyWorld in like 82 I remember seeing Mr. Pibb...and asking "What the heck is that soda!?". So I tried it, and gagged....course I wasn't much on Dr. Pepper either.

Speaking of Cherry sodas.....do they still make Cherry Coke?
I can't get that damn CAMEO jingle out of my head....to the tune of Word Up...Gah, its like a cancer.....

mr pibb is alive and well in cali- it's pretty much a substitute wherever dr pepper is'nt served.tastes nearly identical too.

cherry coke is also still made. not as carried on store shelves as it used to be. but you can usually find it at a dine-in restaurant.

I'm in CT, and haven't a frickin clue as to what a Del Taco is, or what a Naugles is ;)

Taco Bell has been around forever, but thats literally the only Mexican fast food chain here. I know there are others but not here in CT.....

Crap I see SONIC commericals on TV here, even though they dont HAVE one in Connecticut...and if they do, its not anywhere around me that I can tell.

Personally, I'd be happy if we could just get a Whattaburger here....but only because thats the most disgusting fast food I've ever ingested :)

del taco may be in cali only- it's a food chain that compares with taco bell. alot of the same foods.but cheaper quality, cheaper price etc...and they actually have a very good burger. i prefer their burger over most food chains. their catch phrase used to be "you can get alot ...for what you got! at del taco!"

anyway it used to be called naugles tacos, but got bought out sometime in the 80's i believe.

not too many big boy's restaurants out here. there's one out here in victorville- but it's sort of a ghetto town.

                                        Let's see...

Cherry Coke: Definately still around....I buy it often.

Mr. Pibb: Still around...bad Dr. Pepper knockoff...Wendy's serves it here.

Jolt: I'm pretty sure it's still around...and always has been...still see it in stores now and then.

Mello Yellow: Did this really go away? I could swear I see it festering in drink coolers all the time. I never liked it...seeing as it looks like a urine sample.

Speaking sodas...has anyone ever come across Nitro cola?

                                        As far as 80s news...
I remember the day when all my friends and I were devastated by:

"Dude! What are we gonna do?! David Lee Roth is leaving Van Halen!!!!!!!"

I remember lots of my degenerate friends sporting the smoking baby "1984" shirts at the time. I preferred to mix it up a bit by wearing licensed (read: Bought at a comicbook/head shop) Black Sabbath and Judas Priest shirts. My Mom did not approve :)

Some of the Memorable News Stories that I remember from the 80s:

Regan Getting Shot and the Challenger Explosion. I am almost positive
that both of those major events happened on days I was home sick from school because I remember watching them on TV in endless news reports that would have only happened if I was actually home. I was definately home for the challenger explosion because I was flipping channels and suddenly every channel was showing the same thing, this big explosion in the sky and nobody knowing what the hell was going on. "Was that supposed to happen?".

As far as nightly news is concerned, the only other major event that sticks in my head is when Bud E. Dwyer (I think that was his name) committed suicide during a press conference. And I only remember that because, well, that doesn't happen all that often ;)

Otherwise its all a blur. The Berlin Wall stuff I remember, about it coming down, and then the next big memory was when Desert Shield turned into Desert Storm. My buddy and I were driving home from a CHILD WORLD store that was going out of business. We were looking for Robotech model kits and Anime toys. (I stupidly ignored all the clearance priced GI Joe stuff)....on the way home we were listening to the radio and then it started to blurt out "We have begun the air war! We are attacking baghdad and iraq!". My buddy and I drove home, watched some TV, and he took off home. Who knew what was going to happen. I recall watching TV I think all night long, through the night and into the next morning...just glued to CNN, cuz they had Peter Arnett in that hotel live along with that other black guy who's name now escapes me....
